Well I actuallly like 3rd person in T3 so I like both views and if Oblivion has a change perspective button the so should Thief.
Take a look at the 3rd person mode in Oblivion. What does it look like? That's right. It's a 1st person mode with the exact same movement, but with a 3rd person model with mediocre non-dynamic animations pasted in the player's place, and the camera taken somewhere else. The 3rd person mode in Oblivion and Fallout 3 is a great example of 3rd person mode that doesn't impact the 1st person mode in any way. The controls for both are exactly the same, the 1st person controls. There is a drawback though... The 3rd person mode is lacking in dynamicity and looks. The character movement looks robotic and too gamey, and the reason is that the developers were willing to sacrifice the looks of one system for the superior playability of another system.
The problem with having both modes hybridized is not that complex.
If you want to make 3rd person look good, you compromise the playability of both modes. If you want both modes to play well, you compromise the looks of the 3rd person mode. (I'm not including the changes in level architecture in this.)

First person all the way.
One of my other favorite games (Duke Nukem 3d) was followed up by console-oriented third-person games, and just look how well that turned out for them! :) It worked so well, they're not even in business anymore.
There is something to be said for giving your fans what they want. Your fans are, after all, the reason you're successful in the first place.
This is captain obvious, signing off.

I know it's probably been mentioned before but AC and AC2 are good examples of great 3rd person and even though that's not much of a stealth game it still works. Also Velvet Asassin(for those of you who played it) was another stealth game that pulled off 3rd person reasonably well.

No one is saying there haven't been games which did third person well. We're just saying it isn't right for a Thief game.

Yes.
Although some of are saying that no 1st-person game, made with the strengths of 1st-person in mind, that then added 3rd-person, did 1st-person well. :p

Ahem.
Duke Nukem started as a third-person platformer.

Yeah, but a platformer game like Duke Nukem (

I'm all for immersion, first person plz. Honestly Thief is one of those games that you can loose yourself in. Not just because of a fairly open ended environment, but because it feels so alive. Its atmospheric, and because of the fact that you sneak your way through places/enemies its a game that pretty much screams to be explored. Its a unconventional method to gameplay yet its so much fun, it really takes a special person to be drawn to a game this.
I will have Thief 4 on release if it shapes up to be as great as its previous games.
Till then I'll be playing the The Dark Mod, it really does feel like a new Thief game, with all the improvements one would expect.

Personally, I will play in first person. I have no issue with a third person option, however the 'body awareness' mechanic and funky turning should not carry over into the first person view. Either have it present in third person only, or eliminate it all together.

I'm not sure where the debate has gotten to at this point, but I don't think third person "ruined the gameplay" for me in TDS. I still found it to be a genuine Thief game.
As long as first-person is still included in Thief 4, I'll be happy. If it's removed entirely (pray that doesn't happen) I probably won't buy the game at all. It would just say all sorts of bad things about the developers' production values if that were to be the case.
All in all, I think people are setting themselves up for disappointment if they think Thief 4 will be first person only. It isn't going to happen.
