If T4 came out and received rave reviews from everyone, you would not touch it at all for the simple fact that it was third person only? I think you are just trying to make a point.

If it's third person only, or they ruin first person the way they did in TDS, I won't be buying it either.
I also won't be buying it if they do the hybrid crap the Deus Ex team did....pulling the player in and out of first / third for 'style'.

Wait, so you have no interest in the new Deus Ex? Even with its strange 1st to 3rd person view changes, it looks pretty solid.

Well, I guess there are some stubborn fundamentalist around here. Very close minded. Very arrogant.

That's not it at all. Those labels will apply to you if you won't see past that and realize people's brains work differently. What doesn't bother you at all, and is merely different use of visual styles, is jarring and frustrating and distracting for others. Same with flashing graphics, large or numerous HUD graphics, visual noise and clutter, bloom, fast-twitch situations, and other personally-incompatible design choices that take away the enjoyment for certain persons.
What you mistake for fundamentalism is simply the fact that the games we are fans of we are fans of for not having those qualities, or fewer of them, or can be modded out without breaking the game or creating a cheat. Thief is attractive to me for not imposing common aesthetics that I cannot ignore to the detriment of my entertainment. It has nothing to do with you and what you like. If Thief 4 is made like a Thief game, and the additional stuff to appeal to the masses is optional, not imposed, then there won't be the problem. In the meantime, we have been solicited for our opinions by EM, and therefore, will express our hopes for at least one game for this decade that is not full of expected incompatible aesthetics unlike the games we enjoy. Can we have one game, please? Just one more?

I had a lot of interest, but EM lost me when they hybridized the views and refused to consider our requests for a menu option to disable the switches in perspective. I can appreciate them wanting to give it their own stamp, and appeal to those who enjoy the cinematic approach to gaming, but I like first person proper..not hybridized systems. Sure, you can avoid it to some extent if you play in a strict manner but that defeats the whole point of a Deus Ex game, in my opinion.
If a modder in the community comes up with a way to hack out the third person, I may pick up the game when it's cheaper...but Eidos Montreal is not getting the full price from me. ;)

From what I gather you can switch off 3rd person totally, in game.

Switch it off in deus ex 3? Hmm i doubt it and even so that's not really fixing the problem.
The game mechanics (or lack of, especially with regards to takedowns) have been so heavily designed around first person and simpler-than-even-quick-time-events takedowns that modding just to remove third person will not cut it.
Stealth is so heavily based around a cover system that even to someone playing the game normally will look pretty stupid - from videos i have seen the player's head is clearly feet above the cover, yet no one can see him because "huur he's using cover mode".
And that's a large problem with the systems within this game. They are all very static and digital. You can either be seen or not be seen. There is no in between, no variance, no hiding in shadows.
Not sure how much sound and footsteps play a part in stealth but i imagine not a great deal as why develop this element as it's clearly not the path they are going down - i doubt there's even a creep key.
The whole world is a series of mini-game systems in this regard.
Where as thief or deus ex previously merged all the hiding, shooting and whatever into one big experience, deus ex hr has split this all up into lots of seperate modes where the game automatically does the work for the player. You don't have to worry about being seen if you just press the cover button, as long as the enemy is not your side of cover. Same about being hit.
You don't have to worry about sneaking up on an enemy in order to take him down or even where to hit him to take him down - it's all done for you in extreme campovision.
There just seems very little subtlety to the gameplay mechanics. From what i've seen, the area that has most subtlety is actually the dialogue system with your choices there. The same can't be said for the actual choice of dialogue or voice acting... haha.
Basically, unless modders are given a huge amount of access to the ai and to the game itself, it really won't be possible. Even if they were and somehow managed to deal with all these issues (a huge task in itself), all of the levels in the game have been designed around the current systems and likely wouldn't really fit with a more fluid first person approach similar to the older games. It might work, but how well i just don't know.
In summary - get used to third person, you aren't going to get a good first person alternative.
zachary1975 on 26/6/2011 at 17:09
i like first person better because it is easier to press the button. i played one thief 3 fm and i accidentlly turned on the third person viewing perspective and it was impossible to press the buttons on a control panel(at the time i didn't know how to turn it off).

Third person can not be turned off totally in Deus Ex 3.
