I'll try to find that.

Warren Spector: Man, was I dead set against third-person. Personally, I've always been a first-person guy. And I could hear the screams of anguish from the Thief fan community at the merest mention of third-person. But the decision became trivially simple when some team members started with our first-person "body awareness" system, hacked in a third-person mode by simply repositioning the camera, and then forced me to sit down and play it. Even in its earliest, most hacked form, third-person was intensely cool.
More important, without making any other changes to the game design, it gave Thief a very different flavor. Once I saw THAT - the fact that the tense, claustrophobic Thief experience could be transformed into a more tactical, information-based, plan-driven action experience - I was sold. We had to do a non-hacked third-person mode.
Now, I love both modes. Neither is better or harder than the other. They're just different. And given that one of ION's core tenets is to allow players to customize the gameplay experience to suit themselves, how could we NOT make third-person available?

At first I was like: "Well, they made 1st person out of 3rd person, and that led to some problems, but the system was one of the first of it's kind, so it's an honest mistake." :erg:
Now that I read the interview I'm like: "What? They started making the system from a logical startpoint, a simple 1st person mode? How could they fail so miserably with the movements? Didn't they test them at all?" :grr:

First person view only.
Third person is not very immersive at all.

So why not both? You want play it 1st person but I like 3rd. So you want to deprive me of enjoying the game? Why do you want only 1st person? Don't you know that some people prefer 3rd view?

Because that's NOT how thief gameplay was designed to work. It's a First Person Sneaker! Some games are meant for 1st person, some games are meant for 3rd person. Thief gameplay was meant to be 1st person because it's a sneaking game...if you can see around corners...like third person allows...it drastically changes the game into something it was never intended to be, an arcade action game. It's fine if you LIKE 3rd person, but that doesn't mean it has to be in every game. Sometimes you just have to accept that some games are meant to be presented in a certain way. It's not all about YOU. It's about what's best for the gameplay.

So it should be good if both views are presented, I don't care if that will take 1 year more in development. If I have to, I'll give $50 more for it. :cheeky:

I'd sure like to see you elaborate on
this claim, particularly in a series that has already featured leaning and scouting orbs.
I'd say the opposite is true. Any change that enables Garrett to see more of his surroundings reduces tension, but increases Garrett's ability to plan ahead. If third person did anything, it would make thief less action orientated and more tactical.
My personal feeling about third person and gameplay, based on my experience playing T3 in third person, is that third person isn't all that powerfull, and rarely gives you a significant advantage over the sort of leaning that we had in T1 and T2. In practice, it doesn't change the gameplay much.
Arguments against third person which focus on polish are more solid.
Personally, my vote was for both. My preferred option would have been "am happy either way", and I felt that voting to include both was a closer fit then voting to specifically exclude third person.
