I found 3rd person merely useful for making screenshots or movies so that one could see a character in it. I forced myself never to use it to spy around corners.

I prefer to "play" Garrett than "follow" him.
Can someone tell me what exactly third person simulates?

For the sake of argument (abstract example, not talking specifically about TDS): body awareness. No one likes first person platforming. You know you should be able to just barely make the jump, but most of the time you either jump too early and don't quite make it to the other side, or miss the jump and fall staight away. Why? because you don't know where your legs are. Now, first-person body awareness makes this a bit better, but it's still very awkward to have to look straight down at your feet to make the jump. The third-person "out of body experience" paradoxically makes jumping more natural, since it provides better control over your virtual body.

I have nothing against third person view as long as it's done well. So I vote number 2.

Can't say I had those problems when playing TDP or TMA. You'll figure out the right timing pretty quick.

Yup. I don't look down at my feet to see where I'm jumping, you judge it based on knowing how far your personal speed will get you. Once you figure out the maximum jump you can make, it's just a little time before it becomes second nature.

Give it another 8 years and you'll eventually sort it out ;)

My humble opinion:
If the 3rd person view DOES NOT affect the functionality of 1st person view AT ALL, then it could be discussed whether to bring in both options or not. However, if I alone was to decide, I'd NEVER bring in 3rd person. No matter what. To me, Thief is all about 1st person. Even the knowledge of having an option would be disturbing.

Don't forget -- 3rd person and 1st person views have totally different game mechanics and physical awareness. Having it a"switch on the fly" a la TDS would cause it to be faulty a la TDS. For it to be a seamless transition, there would have to be a load time and a whole new set of mechanics (which would completely change the feel of the game) than from the other view.
3rd person does NOT equal 1st person, in any way. That is why they are (usually) separate genres.
