I just got Thief:Gold after playing Thief 2 and is it just me or is the first one much harder?
And why doesn't Garet have lockpicks?
That's my most favourite item.

It is always best to start at the beginning.
Garrett doesn't have his lockpicks yet. Patience, grasshopper...
The first one is by far better than the other two. The first one is the only classic in the series, with part two getting honours for being a decent forgery.

That is one opinion...

I don't think the first one is too much harder. It just seems harder because it was the first one that introduced stealth. So the levels had more emphasis on stealth. Metal Age was more lenient yet also more complex in the missions, I thought.

I'm one of those people who think the first one is better... and yes, perhaps slightly harder than T2, but not all that difficult!

I played TMA first so I hold it dearer to my heart than Gold. All in all though< I liked TMA better partly because the storyline was more cohesive and straightforward. To me, the first one felt more like a collection of random levels with a story made to fit them. I also thought Gold was slightly harder of only because of the huge levels. The lack of tools from the get-go didn't help either. I can't tell you how many times I got lost in Haunted Cathedral and Bonehoard the first time I played.

The Dark Project was the first I played; it dropped into my hands 2 years ago and I had never heard of it. It blew me away. I still haven't beaten it. I got Thief 2 and loved that, despite my old slow machine. I don't know which I like more; TDP was totally new, but Thief 2 had some damn cool missions, more centered on thieving, and Secrets, which I really love. It's a toss-up for me. A damn shame a Thief 2 Gold could never see the light of day.
