Hi taffers, i have this map where the game takes underneath the earth, a giant cave with grey buidings, its pitch black, the only light its a natural one but its constantly flickering, like some one was flickering with the eyes. The idea is to leave the player in a maze an confuse him/her with this switching between blindness and vision, the player must hurry because deadly things are aproaching and find a way out.
The question is, is this safe for the eyesight of the players or can this lights effect somehow damage the eyesight?

Depends how fast the light is switching. If this is a stoposcopic light, forget it. This makes the player sick. You can do this in a single room or a couple of rooms. That's enough.

Mazes are generally confusing enough on their own.

I think you have a setup in mind where it takes ~2 seconds or more for the light to slooowlyy fade to darkness and back to maximum (which would still be quite dark, right?)
That shouldn't do any harm, I guess. Just avoid producing toooooo much brighness compared to darkness and avoid quick changes in brightness.
Sounds interesting, but might not be everybodies taste... especally if you are in a hurry on top.
I guess the horror that crawls in with that scenario might scare off quite a few players.

If the lights turn on and off quickly, like a strobe light, especially if it's very dark otherwise, you should warn players in the readme because such things can trigger seizures in those with epilepsy.

That is also a nice idea flip between full darknes and light with a interval of 1 or 3 seconds.
i placed my syster to test the fast flickering and at somepoint she got sick :p...but my fear is that it can damage the eyesight, otherwise this stoposcopic light combined with the proper music "Radion Storm" by Jeff mills:

Oh dear ... no ... please not such a hectic scene with that sort of music and heavy flickering.
I am not sensible for strobo effect myself.... but that sounds like a real pain. ;)
Not sure if strobo can harm the eye, but keep in mind:
it can lead to epileptic shock !
People dropping unconscious... biting off their tung... and in worst case dropping dead as a sideeffect.
And younger players would not be impressed at all if you add a warning.
Are you willing to risk that?
Since it wouldn't be limited to a single room... you are about to play a dangerous game there.

:ebil:... i rember years ago a Japanese Cartton serie that sent millions of kids to the hospitals due to its lights effects.
Ok, i´d better forget this wicked madness and work on something lighter

Health warning on my strobelights says not to use them for longer than 60 seconds at 12 Hz in one burst (12 flashes per seconds) and that no risk for seizure is 5 seconds between turn on and off at constant use.
hope that helps some way :p
