Yikes, I just checked the radar... hunker down, Renz. It's supposed to get to me Wed night/Thursday. Lovely.
Hopefully by the time it reaches your area, you'll just be dealing with thunderstorms. But me? I dunno if it's going to be as bad as what's going on down in Louisiana and South Alabama, but I'm right underneath where a cold and warm front are meeting. It's going to be a wild night.
Stay safe, man.
As far as the weather phenomenon and it's relation to possible global warming, I have to say it's quite suspicious. Christmas tornadoes aren't exactly unheard of around here. They do happen. But 38 in one state alone (as per the current count)? That's well beyond slightly unusual. More unimaginably extreme.
We've had far too many record breaking events over the last 3 years to write it off as nothing more than a particularly strange stretch of seasons.

I've never seen so much flooding about. There's a local park near to me that is literally now a lake. I wonder if global warming is actually starting to manifest itself now.
I hope not. Because mainstream thinking on climate change is that there should be some economic benefits up to about +1.2C of warming (we're currently at about +0.8C), followed by economic losses there after and danger after about +2C. If this wacky weather is climate change come early so to speak (and I wouldn't put any money on it being not, given that everywhere, which is a lot of places, is getting freak weather), then we've misjudged. Badly.

Damn, that is awful. I wish everyone affected the best.
Is the UK like the states in regards to the homeowner's insurance clause that requires one to have specific flood insurance to recoup losses, as opposed to just general insurance?
At the moment insurance isn't likely to be a problem. But at some point insurers are going to struggle to keep coughing up and - if it is reasonable to pin weather extremes on climate change - we'll have to start going after polluters for compensation.
