Greetings,
greenie2600(
http://thiefmissions.com/m/SOD1MountainMaya) (as for my first released mission, pretty clumsy but playable one)
Well, I'm not a master at all, and I have only few to show. I just enjoy the DromEd'ing. :(
I remember the times when I've been making mechanist indoors without even using grid and then wondering, why my map had to pop-up an error each time I portalize :cheeky: I remember those days with romantic nostalgia. Good times when I wanted to build something in the game of my childhood.
Anyway, a suggestion: enjoy the process of map design and brushing the interiors, streets, abstract "rooms", whatever. It's not neccesary to try making a hard and complex mission (atleast at the early stage), just enjoy creation of it, just like an artist enjoys while drawing a live landscape.
As myself, I somehow find the FMs without using high-detail custom objects/textures more fascinating. Brings good feeling of the original game.

You could also try doing a reloaded mission. Those have been pretty fun in the past and resulted in some creative spins on the old architecture/setting.

My first release was Jenevere De Ja Vu, and when I look back at it today I feel as if it is not finished anymore. I look at my work and think ' what was I doing?'

Tbh, that doesn't sound like something for a beginner. Even though they're not creating a large mission, just navigating one of the OMs could be a bit daunting for a first effort.

I'm in agreement with FrenchDecay, but your rate of progress should depend on your own aspirations and goals. I guess it depends on whether you are overall satisfied with content that is easily playable or brief and to-the-point.
Why do I agree? I've been learning DromEd and studying tutorials as I've progressed with making my "first" FM. It may not turn out to be my first, because it includes a town that is divided into three sectors based on social class: nobility, merchants (and the like), and lower-class individuals. It is more complicated than some FMs and the process can be daunting, but that is where my imagination took me, and that it is what I feel comfortable with. If I venture off into something less complex, then that project may actually be released first.
Rely on your current understanding of the Editor and try to envision what level you are comfortable at progressing. Start simple if you like, and progress later if needed.
