FM authors trolling. - by derfy

So, is it an unspoken rule that, if there's an AI around and you need both hands free AND there's a chest nearby (bonus points for being locked!), said chest WILL contain something heavy like a hammer? And of course there's no safe place to drop it.

I never did that to people.

A hammer or a bedroll in the footlocker by the bed with a sleeping AI is also a common variation. Yes, I suppose it's one of those cliche gags that some authors do. I don't recall if I ever did it - I probably did.

I always thought it would have been a great variation on this theme if a chest gave the player a boulder.
We should start a thread on Thief FM cliches, btw. Maybe this could be it.

Soulforge has this in the sleeping quarters. It is not just an FM thing. Sometimes the hammer can be dropped on a bed carefully without too much noise. Does this little "You just got messed with" trick tick me off a little.... yes, just a little. In reality, you would open the box and not pick up the item it it were useless. Does turning off the auto quip/autosearch or whatever it is called stop this from occuring?

Unfortunately it won't, but you should be able to crouch and drop the hammer/mace, even on a stone floor, without it alerting anyone. The sound can be misleading in this case.
edit: I checked with a quick test in Dromed. Maybe the game behaves differently, but I'd be surprised.

Tales from the Cleft: Vandal has a clever variation on this that I just encountered yesterday. A mask-like object that looks like loot, but when you pick it up, Garrett says "Uh-oh. This is heavy" or something similar. I was standing a few feet away from a guard at the time, and backed away slowly like Homer in the Simpsons, holding this statue, until I was halfway down the stairs below and felt safe to drop it.

I remember one FM where there was a door that didn't just open normally when you frobbed it, instead it flung open violently and hit a bucket that was conveniently placed just behind it. Of course there was also a guard nearby. I think it might have been Benny's Dead, but not sure.

Looks like some of GORT's work. Revenge of the Builder had all kinds of evil tricks.
