Hello all,
First off all let me say that coming back for a sneak peak after several years to take a look at ttlg and see the thief community is still very much alive and kicking is a great thing to see! It made me wanted to play thief again and so I am doing just that. Special thanks to those who created TFix and TafferPatcher :thumb: I am going through the original missions and am loving it al over again.
It also tickles me to open up dromed and start learning it again. Luckily I never threw away my printed versions of tutorials and am going through the basics and notice lots of new changes that I love!
But it also makes me wonder, will people still play fm's that has no custom objects, scripts, textures and so on?
Anyway, happy taffing :D

Welcome back! :D
Yes, I think I can safely say that most of us will happily play missions without all the custom stuff. It's nice but not at all essential. What matters most is good gameplay and an interesting storyline, at least to me.

And me.

I agree with NightWalker. I think most people here are more interested in good story and good gameplay than in custom materials. Don't get me wrong, we really like custom stuff but we like the nostalgia of stock resources also. And given a choice between custom materials and good gameplay, I think most people would choose good gameplay.

Custom stuff is good, especially ones with just some increased resolution and detail (but not too much), but in the core it's there only to give an aesthetic feeling and sometimes the really low-res stuff can actually please way more than really detailed and gritty textures just because, say, the colors were more pleasing. I think the artistic part of human mind has it's own perspective on these things. It's hard to properly rationalize it, but yeah, new stuff is cool and all but not necessary, especially if you bring interesting ideas into the FM anyway. They can be classic thief experience (with the inevitable personal touch of the author) or something different. I may have went off-topic.
But I think there will always be people here that appreciate your stuff. New is always exciting.
However, I myself sometimes wonder: if I make an FM and release it in, say, 2015, will there even be people to still care? It would then be nearing 2 decades since Thief came out! But then, even in 2010 I was sure that in a year or two much less people would care. I really lack perspective on this topic :laff:
Sorry for mouthing off off-topic...

Oh mighty Thor, I for one will still care! ;) And, as much as I love other games, even shiny new ones with all the modern techo wizzbang, Thief and the FMs are my favourite gaming joy.
I agree with t'others, azrarhn... custom stuff is nice, some is even mind-blowingly gorgeous, but a good story and play wins for me every time.

I will still be playing Thief in 2015...I hope I will still be playing until I die, whenever that may be :cheeky:....but I hope when I do die I will make the same sound as Garrett, when he dies...especially the TDS death rattle..thats fab!
I am not really bothered about custom objects...its the story that immerses me on the whole.
