I wonder if anyone has ever tried using something like Virtual Box to run a partitioned version of XP or something... I wonder if that would work.
Vbox does have working D3D support now... and Im trying that atm, all old openGL games such as Quake 2 work just fine and someone has managed to get Max Payne1 which is a D3D game working on it as well - so far ive not been able to get Vbox w/Xp to get Thief 2 working...

Win7 is supposed to have a native Virtual XP mode... have you tried that?
mudi on 5/9/2009 at 02:45
It's not really 'native' so much... it's actually just running virtualized. I do need to try it out though. I doubt it'll do anything that just running it in 7 doesn't.

Way to be fatalistic, Bikerdude.
As I understand it, Win7's Virtual XP mode it should be an actual windows XP virtual machine, so it should work as well as a normal XP installation would on the same computer.

sorry, I was trying to be realistic, Win7 virtual mode is really "VirtualPC" in disguise! Its so bloody slow that I wouldn't even run office on it. For the life of me I don't understand why MS would release such a shitty piss poor product and claim its something that it isnt.. AVOID...!!!
Get Vbox as its faster, free and has the best D3D support out of all the virtual machine emulators out there.

Actually my experience with the new Windows 7 "Virtual PC" app has been that it is fairly speedy compared with VirtualBox, and a lot faster than the old Microsoft Virtual PC versions. I still don't think it would be good enough to run games in by a long shot.

Virtual XP only is available on Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate AFAIK.

its seems it only works on some intel chipsets if at all. I think you might have to force fog via a hack etc

Here's my deal:
I've got fog on Thief 2 v 1.18 running wonderfully even with Thief2Extensions enabled. When the game starts a mission for the first time the fog is all there. But when I escape to the menu, check the map, read a scroll, ALT + TAB, and just anything that exits the gameplay screen, the fog disappears when I return. To enable it I must restart thief2.exe and that can be annoying.
