SEGA Signs Obsidian Entertainment To Develop Alien Title For Next-Generation Systems(
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=21694)
SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (December 11, 2006) – SEGA® of America Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today announced that Obsidian Entertainment will create a role-playing game based on the Alien film franchise with license from Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising. This title will be developed for the next-generation systems and the PC.
Obsidian Entertainment draws upon their wealth of design knowledge creating successful games such as the best-selling Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords and the award-winning Neverwinter Nights 2 to bring the Alien franchise to role-playing gamers for the first time. The role playing game will build upon the distinctive look and feel of the original films while utilizing next-generation technology to create an entirely different and unique Alien experience.
Whilst the games will not follow the strict story lines of any of the four films in the series but instead will provide a new experience by drawing from the history and lore that is the foundation of the films.
The releases will also mark the first time games based on the franchise will be made in high definition. The first products are expected to ship in 2008.

It sounds fantastic that Obsidian would eventually make an Alien RPG, right?
Regarding Interplay's vision of a Fallout MMOG, it looks to me rather like a desperate attempt to attract some investors and a bad joke. More high profile companies have hard time developing and supporting MMORPGs, and now a skeleton company wants to make one. That's one amazingly daring erotic dream. But who knows? Maybe it will make IPLY arise from ashes.

$75 million, wow.

that's an awful lot of bottle caps :)

Now all they have to do is to find that damn random encounter with rammed Nuka Cola truck full of bottle caps.
If their luck is 8 at least, that is.

An Alien RPG? I must admit that I am skeptical whether the format is right for it.

RPGs aren't exactly reputed for their suspense.

I was waiting for Sega's Alien announcements to be discussed, I'm actually surprised it took this long. The only time I could see an alien RPG working is if it was a FPS/Adventure/RPG hybrid like System Shock, but considering Gearbox is doing the FPS game that was also announced, I'm not sure if they'll go down the hybrid route.

When is Obsidian going to do something original? It seems a shame to waste that RPG talent on sequels and licensed stuff. That said an RPG that isn't standard fantasy fare[1] could be a refreshing change.
[1] Star Wars is standard fantasy fare despite the hyperdrives and robots.

They stated the Alien RPG would be "epic". I don't recall the movies being epic. I am aghast that they are deviating so much from the source material.

I think it would be cool if it was the space jockey planet.
