It would have to be decals like blood spots. One type should be laid down as the AI walks and disappear over time (as the snow falls?) just to keep the object count down. The other type could be for laying a trail that Garrett could follow, and wouldn't fade (or at least not a quickly).
Maybe PinkDot's texture could be used to make such decals ...

I remember downloading footstep objects but its been so long. They were actually footprint pairs. Tonight I'll check my backup discs for whatever zip file they came in, but it would be relatively easy to just make those objects again!
