They may not be, but you're ignoring the real point of the message: the way you deal with these things at any age remains the same - get off your ass and do something instead of meditating helplessly on whatever it is that's worrying you.
In that case I misunderstood. Makes more sense now. :)

First off I just wanted to say thanks for all the honest responses. It really helps just to hear other people are or have gone through a similar phase. I'll respond to some of the points in more depth later (I'm on set at the moment...PAing on a TV pilot) but I just wanted to clarify that I'm not just sitting stagnant thinking about my life...I'm still working and building connections almost everyday but all these thoughts of introspection are going on every free moment.
Those who remarked that not doing ANYTHING is bad are completely correct so I just wanted to clarify my situation ;)
But again I just wanted to say thanks! I'm feeling a little better. Please ignore this winky face. I'm writing this from my Blackberry and can't delete it to save my life. ;)

Hi I heard all of us 23 year olds were in crisis in this thread?
Here's an appropriate Joni Mitchell song about growing up but still not knowing what any of it means. This recording also represents an appropriate activity, sitting in your room with an acoustic guitar.

It was the same sentiment that Queue had uttered before and it's not exactly uncommon. That's why I mentioned it.
Yeah, but I'm old and should be euthanized.
But seriously, pdenton, nearing the age of forty-one, I'm still filled with self-doubt and second-guessing. Such thoughts can't be helped, unless you're a sociopath. The best thing you can do is to try to make the most of your life without worrying about "success" (because you'll drive yourself crazy trying to measure up to a self-prescribed notion of what is "successful"), don't worry what people think, and enjoy yourself.
And even more seriously, if it'll help matters, I'll teach you how to fuck properly. No pressure.

And scarily, think a few hundred years ago, at the age of 23, you would be nearly done with your life!

...and short and smelly.

I read something about the classic narratives that brought that up. The reason why heros' mentors typically die and they are left alone in the world at that crucial turning point is it would have been pretty common experience once.
Kinda obvious when you think about it, but still novel when someone points it out. Just how inappropriate this is for life today compared to how resonant and romantic it still seems to be is pretty funny.

Kind of eye-opening, for me anyway. I have often heard it's taking longer for our generation to "grow up", but I didn't realize how pervasive this phenomenon really was.

Its not occurring in a vacuum, however.
People are maintaining what would be considered a "middle aged" lifestyle for much longer too. One relevant statistic is that people are retiring much older than before, and many don't plan to retire at all.

Imma let you film guys finish, but young engineers have the worst careers. Thanks. The money's good though.
