If you mean computer engineers them whammo, spot on.
Unless you mean the freelance enterprise software types that charge upward of $100/hr and don't know anything outside of Visual Basic. Those can go rot in hell forever.

pdenton, I only read your first post in this thread and here's my response:
I've been there (I think). I would say I was *there* for a good 5 or 6 years. I'm 24 now and since graduating college and finding a good steady job with a large company that is doing extremely well, my overall worry has been drastically reduced.
The key for me is stability: I'm terrible with large changes, I'll be the first to admit it. I've felt extremely apprehensive about a lot of things concerning my career for years, specifically about being able to hack it. The last few years I have proved nearly all of these doubts false. I've done very well in my first 2 years of employment and I've realized that that is exactly what I needed. It's really too bad it didn't come sooner. I wish I could've done something earlier to test my doubts head on.
Interestingly enough, I'm watching some friends who are several years younger than me go through what I think is the same thing right now (I think it's a natural phase, especially in this economy).
