I was fixing up the <a href=http://www.thief-thecircle.com/fanworks/novels.asp>novels</a> section when I realised that it may be a good idea to let people know what's going on with Correspondence of Thieves and COT2.
So I put this little page together, along with a side by side comparison of the original story's opening with the rewrite's opening.

I know longer doesn't mean better, but sometimes it helps. I'm also a bit curious to see if there's still any interest in thief fanfictions.

I've never actually read the original COT. Always wanted to, but reading it off the screen made my eyes hurt. I could just print it all out though.

considering that i can't figure out dromed (or really, any full-3d engine) to save my life, writing fanfiction sounds like a good source for my creative output as regards to thiefy things.

Thank you for your post, spix's circlet.
I agree that printing out documents of this size (and sometimes questionable quality) is generally a bad idea. I tend to wince when someone tells me they printed out some of my writing for reading later. How many pages was it? I ask... oh, around 50. ACK...
I can't say that I am not entirely sure how formatting the page would help the reader. Truly, you are correct that the second example is far preferred over the original; it's also more professional looking. It's also very time consuming to put together. If it were your own work and you want to put it in that format, then it's worth it. If an author sends their document to The Circle as a txt file and expects us to do that with it, then they'd have to be disappointed. HTML coding it to put in paragraph breaks is hard enough.
What I don't like though is forcing the reader to download an entire document which may or may not work right with their word processor. It entirely seems like too much work for them, when we the authors should be doing everything we can to invite the readers to come read what we wrote, and keep their attention for as long as possible, so they'll hopefully finish.
I am also happy to hear that there are still other fanfics in the works!

OK, may I proceed with the Bulgarian translation of the novel?
Digital Nightfall on 26/5/2006 at 15:44
Well, when I'm done Bulgarian_Taffer sure, but until then anything that's written may change. Great example, today I am going back to some stuff from very early in the story and completely changing it, so that some problems that crop up later can be solved. Writing is a back and forth process. Chapter 1 is never done until the whole story is done.

Thank you for the answer.
Last time I told you about a possible bulgarian translation you stopped me... but it was almost an year ago when I asked you... since then, I never heard anything about COSAS and I almost thought that the project is dead.
Glad to know that it's still alive and thank you for the hard work!

PDF is a very troubling format. It's a nightmare for slow connections, crashes tend to be frequent. RTF can also sometimes be fishy, though less so, but I've sadly encountered a staggeringly large number of users who can't even open an RTF file.
Now, Word CAN convert a document into an HTML file, but you'd have no way to then convert that into anything resembling a book page.

Not that my response helps you much, Digi, but I'm all for any creative endeavors by the people of the TTLG community. Not all projects have to be shared. If one has fun and learns something from the sheer doing of it, then one should go for it!:thumb:

I agree. I think what I've learned from writing COT has been far more valuable than COT itself. I mean, even a good fanfic is still a fanfic. I do want to finish it before I move on to my own works (of which I have several ideas).
