I'm disappointed with the stealth and I haven't played a stealth character yet. In fact, that's the reason why. I'm still able to take advantage of the AI easily.
If you walk around, the NPC owner of whatever building you are in will follow you. By going to one end of the building, waiting for him to get you in his line of sight, then making a mad dash to your target (locked door, loot, etc), you're given a precious few seconds where no one can see you. This means that even a blundering barbarian like myself can steal things lying around.
I also strongly dislike the amount of locked chests in the game. I'm no good at picking locks, but about a third of all the chests I've seen so far have been locked. As I level, the locks also level with me, so there's next to no chance of getting better at picking locks later. That is, it's now or never. I wish a bash option had been implemented, as this would balance out the amount of locks for fighters. Of course, special loot just for thieves could be placed in special steel chests which can't be bashed, therefore giving thieves that extra advantage.
Edit: On second thought, maybe that is a good thing. It balances out the three main classes, giving the 'weaker' (mages and thieves) a perk which fighters (generally considered the better class) can't utilize. Still. All that loot going unplundered makes me sad...

I'm able to pick the hardest types of locks at a security level of 22.
Which, is a failure of the security system in of itself.

Yeah, I really, really suck at both the lock picking minigame and the disposition minigame. I just can't get the hang of either. Though as an Imperial I can just use Voice of the Emperor, but I still can't get in locked chests...
