Soo... I've been wasting time playing Thief 2 instead of being productive. Just like college!
NOTE: I presume that the following doesn't count as a spoiler, hence not posting in the spoiler section. I apologize if anyone disagrees.
I had something kind of funny happen in the Framed mission. There's a narrow hallway leading to the Warden Affairs room, and the only way (I think) to avoid being spotted by the female guard is to shoot a rope arrow into the ceiling and let her pass beneath you.
As I was climbing, I noticed an unlit light fixture on the wall. It must have been a gas lamp in the hall which I'd extinguished on an earlier visit through this part of the level. Well, I'd forgotten about doing that. When I look at it, it frobs, and I think "Oooh! This must open a secret!" So, I try using it, but all it does is turn on.
Now, I played T2 way back in the day, and I don't know if I forgot or simply didn't know that you could re-light gas lamps. Now imagine my surprise as the guard turns the corner and sees me while I'm going through my weapons looking for water arrows... :o
As I was playing on Expert, I figured it'd be easiest just to reload. This time I didn't climb all the way up, but found a magical place in vertical space. A place where you're just high enough not to be seen, but not high enough for NPCs to pass below you. After a little laugh, I pulled myself up so that she would stop walking in place and leave me to my thiefy errands. :cheeky:

you can just flatten yourself against the wall to get past her.
Still, it gave me quite a shock the first time I frobbed a gas lamp. I think it's pretty annoying that you can't frob them to turn them off. I mean why not?

Situations like this have happened to me in various forms over the years, and always strengthens my love for Thief. The game is like a simulator of sorts, with so many possible dynamic situations available.

DAMN straight ! A real thief would also have one of those thingys that snuffs out a torch. A cup on a stick kinda thing. Anybody know what they're called ?

I believe they are candle dampers.

EDIT: I typed the following exactly as shown before seeing pavlovscat's post!
A candle snuffer. Heh heh. Well, snuffing out candles with the fingertips was implemented in TDS. Before I became familiar enough with the maps and gameplay in the older games, I would have liked to have had the choice to break a lightbulb/light fixture with the sword or blackjack--with the con being the noise it would make--and some electric light fixtures should've be shorted out with a water arrow, but now I understand that it would've been a lot more work and time, and it doesn't bother me anymore.

OOPS! :o Been too long since Catholic school. ;)

Actually, I was surprised to find that "snuffer" was the common term. It seems too informal or slangy.:)

I agree. I was thinking about the same thing when I was playing, about Thief being almost like a simulator. They give you an environment, with things roaming around, and just let you go at it.

Really? That's awesome! I think it's been almost 4 years since I played TDS. I don't remember finger-snuffing stuff. I wonder if I just forgot about it.

Haha! The first one of those I ever saw was a very dainty little ornate one with silver and gold that my parents had on a shelf. Looks like something you'd have on an expensive dinner set. I can't help but imagine a thief pulling it out of his cape and very primly putting out a candle before moving on. :laff:

"What key did you bind the Snuffer to?"
"Did you find the Snuffer Upgrade?"
:laff:
I don't know if you ever visited the Thief 3 official promo site. One of the pages had a scene with animated candles. If you moused-over the flames, they'd snuff out and smoke for a while, before resetting. Another page had a flock of birds, and if you moused over a bird, it would fly off. Anyway, the candles on the site had me wondering if we might see that in the game, then the devs told us we could pinch the candles out in T3. A nice touch.
