Thief I has got to me my fav game ever. I've never played any of the others. I want to try to play the original again but not sure I want to go through the headaches of trying to get it to run on my XP system. Being I've only played the first one, will I be happy if I just get the third one (which looks like it plays fine on XP) and play that one instead?

Both Thief 1 and Thief 2 can be made to run on XP quite easily. There are couple of FAQs on this forum that explain how to do that. And if you loved Thief 1 be sure to play the second one. Thief 3 has caused some mixed feelings here, it's good but nowhere as good as the first two games.

Thief 3 is a great game if you've never played the first 2! Then it pales in comparison!
But as mentioned, XP should easily run Thief 1 & 2 with a few tweaks. Vista caused me a few more problems, but I've got both games running fine even now. No fog though, but hey!

And FM's for Thief1/2.

I use XP and the only problem I had was installing off that Sold Out Software double disc and getting the T2 movies to play. Apart from that it was fine.
As far as I know it's Vista that is the real hassle.
If you've never played the other games then you are missing out on the amazing Thief 2, my favourite in the series, and Thief 2X. Also hundreds of fan missions. Some of them are better than original missions.

I'd say don't skip Thief 1 without even trying, it might even work right off the bat on XP like it did for me

I also had no trouble getting T1 to work on my XP computer. The -lgntforce switch was the only thing needed. T2 didn't even need that.
I got my current computer specifically for T3, but I now use it mainly for T2 (aka Dromed :D). My old computer died within a year. The motherboard went, so it was fortunate therefore that I already had another one with all of my things backed up.
T1 broke when I got a new graphics card, but that was fixed by installing DDFix.

Yup, I've never had a problem getting either T1 or T2 to run on my Server 2003 desktop either...or on XP when I used it. I think the horror stories of getting it to run on XP have more to do with the hardware running beneath XP, than XP itself. Sometimes it's just the wrong combination of hardware that will cause issues. I've been fairly careful about what I install, so I've had no issues.

It worked right out of the box for me on XP. I've had to help a few friends get it working though, and honestly it's not that much trouble.

Ok, cool. I will give it a go then.
