I like continuity. So I agree with PotatoGuy. Garrett will be the protagonist but the girl should get a (small) side story in Thief 4.

I would not mind seeing Garrett or a female protagonist in Thief 4. However, I would prefer that if they choose to make the next protagonist a woman, they should not make it clear that it is the same girl.
There are always things left untold in the thief world and that is the way I like it.

Go on then, wish her away.
Wish who away? I forget.:weird:

Garrett can't keep her. She's underage. :ebil:

I don't understand what all the hate is about. The end cutscene is a wonderful sendoff to Thief 3 and its prequels. It introduces a plot element that should or should not be used in a sequel. But in truth it means nothing, it only implies things, suggests them.
Some suggestions:
# The girl is the next generation of the Master Thief, raised and trained by Garrett. She faithfully follows in his footsteps, but...
...her life is turned upside-down when Garrett is kidnapped/killed by unknown parties, most likely for his past actions. She hunts them down and avenges Garrett. The game ends on a shot of her standing on a rooftop, looking over the city, towards her future as the new and unchallenged Master Thief.
(A different take on the above is to have the girl kidnapped/killed, and Garrett playing the avenger.)
...she becomes disillusioned with Garrett and his ways and turns on him, either using her training to try to dispose of him personally, or siding with the bluecoats to help them catch Garrett. (Or maybe even both. Stealthy bluecoats, who woulda thunk it?) The game ends with Garrett as the "winner", but it's a pyrrhic victory as his protegé lies dead at his own hands.
(In my opinion, the above scenario works best as a secondary plotline, with the main plotline being some great threat that rears its ugly head and Garrett must save the day once again.)
...early in her training, Garrett realizes that this is no life for a young girl and dumps her at an orphanage or something (not Shalebridge!). He ventures on alone, in the rain.
...soon she surpasses Garrett, and he is forced to consider her an equal. Where once there was only one Master Thief stalking the city, there are now two. Working together.
(This could allow for co-op teamplay, or allow players to choose between two different characters to play with. One being an older, slower but stealthier Thief that solves his problems from a distance, while the other a younger, faster acrobatic Thief that prefers close encounters.)
...she "graduates" to become a Master Thief, but out of respect for her teacher, she leaves the city and sets up somewhere else. Cue Thief game without Garrett, Benny, Burricks or the city. Yawn.
...she "mysteriously" gets knocked up and has a baby. Now Garrett has to not only pay the rent, but feed the family as well. The girl becomes a background "assistant" to Garrett, while he remains the (overworked and stressed out) star of the show. The game ends when Garrett gets fed up and jumps off the Bafford estate, skewering himself on the sword of Benny the guard. Benny is suddenly and unexpectedly promoted, without a taffin' clue as to how that taffer wound up dead at his feet.

Frankly, I couldn't care less of what the girl at the end of TDS represents. As long as she isn't going to be the main character in Thief 4, whatever interpretation is fine for me. :ebil:
I want Garrett back. I just can't believe that the EM developers can't put together a decent plot to make his return more than believable and logical.

Well a couple of days later after seeing Garrett she went to the bonehoard to find some cash, and was eaten by a mutant burrick.

Amen Brotha! Preach it! I have the same feelings. I will feel ripped off if the guy that originally did the Garrett voice overs
Stephen Russel, is not in it and Garrett as a character is not in it.
I think Eidos owes the customer a really really GOOD, thief game with Garrett NOT that girl at the end of TDS being in it. After taking away the water arrows and swimable water in thief 3 and the having those idiotic fog levels to go through. Just a good game with Garrett in it playing the hero would please me as a thief fan......as long as they include THIS time what I mentioned they took out in the last game!
Oh yeah, one thing I LOVED about TDS was "the cradle" mission...I hope they have one of those in this game.

Ahh, wonderful when people get the point! :)
Think about it this way: Could Lara Croft possibly be replaced by a male character in the next Tomb Raider game? NO!!! Of course not! She IS the game. No Tomb Raider without Lara (not that I like Tomb Raider, but you get the point). It is EXACTLY the same with Thief and Garrett. No Garrett, no new Thief installment. They would simply have to change the title to something completely different.
And another thing. We don't want them to experiment with Garrett's character! He is a loner. Not a guy who adopt kids, no matter how skilled they are. Can you imagine Garrett being some kind o surrogate mom for a child? It makes me feel sick! It ruins Garrett's personality.

This one gets my vote.
