I was just playing Company of Heroes multi-player, a 1 v 1 against some seriously disturbed individual, when it hit me - TTLG are all pretty normal people. There are characters, pedants, ragers, idiots (mhmmm), jokers, zany people and a few more twits, but no one is really out there. Even Koki, who I didn't miss until just now, was pretty okay compared to some of the nuts you meet in real life and on the net behind that anonymous cloak of the screen.
I think the oddest person I've encountered through my affiliation with TTLG is Oddity and although I don't like to jump to conclusions his trouble with the law kind of backed up what I knew about him from his posting; he came across as being a... challenging and difficult individual with some complex issues, the kind of which might make someone lack the social awareness that stops you doing odd things.
Anyways, I just wanted to post this because I realised how cool everyone here is. I don't think I'd turn down a beer with any of you. Except you dethtoll but err that goes without sayin :p

Hehe, good thread and I've actually had the same thoughts about TTLG as well. It's definitely an... interesting cast of characters. I actually half-wrote a short story once with the chars loosely based on some posters, but never got around to editing or posting it here :p
And yes, I'll totally share a pint with any of you first chance I get :) Out of curiosity deth, since I don't recall, why no alcohol? just dont like it or other reasons?

I just straight up don't like it. And even when I did like it, I was very particular about it. Beer is nasty to me. Vodka is drinkable so long as you mix it with something, preferably orange juice. Everything else can get the fuck out.

I bet you're a lightweight. You get sleepy first, then you sing and tell everyone you love them, then quiet and starey with a slight risk of some ineffectual violence. Finally you vomit all over your trousers and fall asleep in the corridor.
This whole time Yakoob and I are just enjoying international beers and good conversation. henke burnt the barbeque, Ducky had had to bail him out, CCCToad has failed to impress everyone with his whisky skills and has pissed his pants.

We have characters in our own way. That was the whole point of me making the "NPCs of TTLG" thread with member's avatars.
I don't like alcohol all that much, but I'll drink because for some reason some people bond better when everybody's drinking together, and I want to make everybody feel at home & having fun... Like a good host or friend maybe.

I joined TTLG shortly after entering high school, and it's by far the longest-running community I've been a part of. I think, like Sub said, it mostly comes down to the fact that as far as Internet people go, everyone here is pretty normal, but more than that the discussions are usually a cut above what I've seen on other forums. I've read some really interesting arguments and ideas here that have led me to rethink my positions on a number of issues, and I've been exposed to a lot of great games and other media through this forum.
It helps that it's a fairly small community and a fairly niche focus, but ultimately the quality of any forum is really a product of the people who comprise it.
So yeah, this community might be old enough to drive a car in some states but I'm glad you guys are still around :thumb:

Actually I need to down at least a whole bottle before I start to feel it and then I turn into an asshole. Not liking alcohol don't mean I'm a lightweight.

I never liked beer or wine. For me if the alcohol's not sweet I have a hard time with it.

"turn to" ;)
Alcohol is definitely a strange beast when it comes to enjoying it, takes time to find what you like. Out of liquours, I drink (good) whiskey straight for flavor alone, maybe with a splash of lemon. As for beers, it took me a year in North Ireland before I learned and found beers I actually enjoy; even now many still taste nasty, but my favorites are amazingly delicious.
Deth, do you ever enjoy being drunk? I'm definitely past my "shitfaced" period and drink for the flavor now (like the glass of Pinot I'm about to have mmmm), but I also enjoy the buzz, especially when shared with friends.
