I will likely be relocating to Lyon next year so will have to completely re-design my drinking palette to mesh with whatever is available there.
Does this still apply to big cities anywhere, though? You can find pretty much what you want, bars serving good beer and cocktails, liqueurs and eau-de-vie, shots, etc. Sure, acceptable wine will be more readily available, but it's not like you're limited to what's produced nearby.
@demagogue, yeah but don't forget I'm a
philistine. What I really don't like in actuality are all the sweetened drinks (herb and fruit liqueurs and creams), anything else is manageable. Pastis is like an institution here, especially in the south, and a good vermouth is great but I don't really like syrupy stuff.

Really? Say hi to Digi for us!
I think your selection is going to be a lot more wine based, if that's not stating the obvious... I lived in Geneva a little while, which has that Rhone-Alps feel too.
Does he still peruse the forums? If so, I'll see if he fancies a swig some time. I keep forgetting that Arkane are based there. I do so love wine, but my hair-trigger susceptibility to savage heartburn forbids me to drink more than a glass or two. I'm primarily a real ale drinker. Used to adore the belgian abbey / trappiste beers but my palette has found them a little too sweet / intense of late. I prefer the subtle hoppy crispness of an ale. If the weather is hot, I'll even enjoy a premium lager or two.

Yeah, he's not on the forums much anymore, actually not really at all. I see him on Facebook, and he's always posting about gaming naturally, so I still think of him in our world... Maybe if something comes up, like an Arkane open house or event or something, it might be a cool opportunity for you to stop by, anyway.

And my post came out sounding like a pretentious douche, haha, sorry. Not my intention. Honestly I'll drink anything with anybody, and never think less of anybody whatever they like or don't. There's plenty that I don't like either...
Rice wine is the pretty big thing here in Asia, so not only in Japan (sake) it turns out, but all these countries. So that's getting a lot of air time for me here. I didn't like it so much at first, but I'm finding variations that I like more than others, actually tending towards the sweeter versions.

Yeah, I'll essentially be starting from scratch socially, so I'll be on the look out for any opportunity which rears its head, naturally.

If you drink Carling Black Label you are NOT welcome to drink with me. This is a sign of terrible taste, in all things in life, and messed up opinions on everything that matters. Also, very low intelligence, rubbish sense of humour and totally incorrect priorities. In short Carling = bad person.
Everything else though, I'm fine.

Good thread. Yeah, I can't think of anyone on TTLG that I wouldn't break bread with, grab a cold one, or even just play some co-op. We do have some characters, that's for sure, and we don't always agree (which gets catty at times) but we all log back in and keep it going somehow. Cheers, TTLG.

Just to amuse you further, my eyes are going, so I do bold to be able to read it.
I also copy/past to notepad so it shows up in larger text and BOLD for the same reason. I can get all the "attention" I need without TTLG! :)I am with you on that. Most of you know about dethy's hearing problems, and I have always been very humbled by them. I don;t think I have told many people (out of shear embarrassment) but I'm rapidly going blind, and I struggle like Hell to read text on my PC. Ctrl+ is my ally here. So rock on TBM, whatever you have to do, do it. Fuck man, you've earned the right in life to post big.
And I have mostly moved on from liquor. I am a beer guy, it treats me well. There are cheap beers for guzzling and good beers for appreciating. Both have homes in my fridge. Also, I recently took a job at the finest authentic Italian restaurant in the city, and we are known nation-wide for our wine list. Chef has had me attend a wine tasting we hosted, and we just had our food/wine pairings meeting for the spring menu. So, I am learning quite a bit about wine and trying wines that I wouldn't have given a second glance to at one time and truly appreciating a 'good one'.

Yep. I'd have a drink with y'all. I'd prefer a good Islay single malt, but I'm up for beers too. St Bernardus Abt 12 or Maredsous Tripel by choice, but I'll drink most amber or red beers. Wine or tawny port works as well.

Well, the European craft is certainly being well represented. Fond of the Belgian stuff myself, though the best example I've had was actually French-Canadian. Fin du la Monde - Unibroue makes a hell of an ale. Too bad it's so damn expensive. The states have their quality beer too - Dogfish Head Midas Touch is damn fine. Archaeology and brewing, a recipe from a tomb, and the ancients apparently knew how to brew.

You'd genuinely be hard pressed to find a time where I don't have a drink in my hand.
Some people say it's a problem... if it is, it's theirs!
