The fact that Gimli and Aragorn are fictitious characters doesn't play a role for my argument, because millions of real people saw that moment on the screen and laughed genuinely and innocently. It is a funny moment, despite the exploitative and abusive history of dwarf throwing.
And when I look at this article's picture I see two guys who apparently are having a fun time. There's no mention of payment in the article, for all I know they might both be doing it for the hell of it. It could be a funny picture for you as well, if you weren't so quick to be concerned.
Why would someone want to get flung around? Maybe because it's fun. Babies and small children like it, artistes too, so do women who are into rock'n'roll dancing and various other activities.
Of course there could be cause for concern, but I don't see the hint here.

google "dwarf throwing" for videos and form your own opinions. Some see it as a performance art and a way to earn a living, others see it as exploitative and degrading. I just wonder about the humanity in the human race sometimes.

Sounds a lot like the arguments people have about women who work as strippers or go-go dancers. Hell, replace "dwarf tossing" with "go-go dancing" and you've got about half the posts on my buddy's fiance's facebook page.

We should discuss the(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWRB6dfME7Y) frog that relaxes on a bench next. It's a similar situation: The only information we have by the guy who posted it, is that it was just a random incident in nature and the frog later galloped happily away to the water. But half the internet is up in arms because they think the frog's been nailed down.
Considering the lack of falsifiability the discussion moves to the meta level where personal opinions and beliefs hilariously start clashing into another. It's not even about the stupid frog anymore, it's about self-portrayal.
A: Hello I'm an optimist who believes in magic and fun. And I think this is one of those awesome moments.
B: Something is wrong here. Magic and fun is a lie. And this frog has likely been impaled for this video.
A: But... :(
B: See how stupid you are and how clever I am? Pessimism will always win, because it's usually right and when it isn't it's been careful. Don't even try buddy.

It's just the price of Friskies to be harrassed by magical flying children I reckon.
