After moving a couple of years ago, I found myself outside of the DSL zone and was stuck on good old fashioned 56k until this summer when I got on cable internet. While it's been fun-it's also highly expensive for my limited budget and I may soon be going back to dialup. What I was wanting to know is what good FPS games would you recommend that don't use steam or need any other online connections (also compatible with Win 7)? I like everything from sci-fi to a good WW2 shooter.

Quake! ;)
I don't have any recent games to suggest that are 100% offline but i know that even though many games require Steam, it's only required to install the game, not to play it, so it's not nessecarily a problem as long as you can keep the 56K connection up during the installation.
If steam doesn't detect an active internet connection it will simply start in 'Offline mode' and run the game anyway.

(
http://www.gog.com/catalogue/shooter) Every shooter on GOG. Should do you for a while :).
To add to Ahris's point, a lot of shooters that come in Disc-based editions might have an online activation, but shouldn't need a fully active connection to play. Then again, I haven't bought a Disc in ages. Don't boxed games still need to advertise if an constant online connection is required?

56k is still around? Jesus. Move back into the DSL zone. You'll save money in the long run.

Operation Flashpoint and Ghost Recon were excellent with pretty good single-player campaign with some squad management.
Brothers in Arms is also a strategic FPS if you got a WW2 itch, along with old Medal Of Honor series with its expansions (Spearhead etc.) There's also Call of Duty for that too, and Modern Warfare (1) which was surprisingly good.
Project IGI series are good for some "smartyman/tactical" FPS action without commandeering a whole squad (usually).
On the other hand you also got Quake, Unreal, Doom 1-3 and Painkiller for some 'oldschool' shooty fun.
There's also Half-Life and plenty of good SP mods (Afraid of the Dark among other choices). Red Faction is also same-era, but rather shitty FPS imho.
Fear 1+2 and expactions are also decent and renowned for standard shooty-shooty with more "clever" AI.
Vampire the Masquarade: Bloodlines - not strictly FPS but definitely a good pick for single player action (also obviously System Shock 1 + 2, and Deus Ex 1-3 in the same category)
That should get you started!

Don't forget about the Jedi Knight series.
Also, not "first person", but all Mass Effect games can be played online once activated. The first two only require a disc check. Crysis + Warhead can also be played internet free (I played that while we were stuck at KAF waiting to move out to our base).
You also might want to take a look at Descent.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R also works with no internet.
Edit: the old ghost recon and rainbow six games.

I am probably the only one here who likes the original Red Faction... Played it a decade ago when it was new and have enjoyed each revisit.

Hey, I paid full retail for Red Faction when it first came out. Awesome new Geomod tech, from the guys who made one of my all-time favorites, Freespace 2. Cool setting, cool premise.
And it sucked donkey shit. A weak Half-Life clone with terrible characters, terrible voice acting, terrible weapons, terrible driving physics, terrible enemy AI, terrible lighting, and terrible level design. Developed in parallel for the PC and the PS2, it was one of the first victims of consolization. Even the Geomod thing ended up as an under-used gimmick.

I liked it for the combat I guess. I love the higher tier guns that the Mercs carry in the later part of the game, the Rail Driver is one of the cooler railgun-like weapons I know of. Also I have a soft spot for the soundtrack.
I agree with you about pretty much everything else though. The Geomod gimmick has very low, hardcoded limits and is rarely actually used throughout the game, and I never really used the vehicles aside for when it was absolutely necessary to progress, I hate vehicle sections in games in general.

I still play Red Faction 1 every now and then. Though I play the PS2 version which for a console FPS is pretty damn kickass.
Anyways my recommendations:
* Blakestone
* Blood
* Doom 1-2
* Duke 3D
* Heretic
* Hexen
* Quake
* Wolfenstein
On the more half half side of the coin I recall Witchaven and Rise of Triad being alright and entertaining to play.
