You might need to punch the 'Num' key on the number-pad in order to set things straight.
If that does not work, then you might want to rebind the keys from within the KEmulator menu:
View/Options->KeyMap

Ok, I've given the game another go and now I have different issues...
I tried using "num" and even the caps lock, but they don't seem to do anything to change the function of the keys.
I changed the key map in the options for the "*" key, which is the pause function, to the "f" key. I got it to work I believe, but it freezes on pause. I picked up a map and tried to look at it through the pause menu as the game suggests, but this also freezes the game for me. I would play the game regardless(who needs a map, right?); however, the objectives are also in the pause menu.
When I press pause, the screen goes greyish and freezes the game to the point where no other buttons work. The only button which works (and obviously I've tried to press pause again) is the "escape" button which simply closes the program.
