I can't imagine the work needed for a proper animation of turning an object in your hands in all directions. I rather have that option but invisible hands than not. It is in no way "immersion" breaking, immersion does not need every real world mechanic perfectly recreated. I have no problem with a "gamey" interface and interaction. the physics manip through mouse-movement is nice but it is not the thing I would say is Frictional's biggest selling point for me. it's just that their games do not suck and provide an survival experience missing in today's games.
QFMFT.
It's called suspension of disbelief, and if a few gamey things get in the way of your enjoyment then you shouldn't be playing games. (Hi PoeticThief!)

edit for Sully: I'm generally pro body awareness in princliple. But I generally come down against it for Thief games since the two that didn't have it managed to be more immersive than just about anything (only Mirror's Edge has managed to come close. That was a long wait). The one with it suffered somewhat from the implimentation, and then there's the inevitable 3rd person foolishness (again something Mirror's Edge understood. Hacking in 3rd person in ME everyone notices the animations are 'wierd', thanks to being specifically tuned for first person). Anyway. probably better discussed elsewhere.
Indeed, TDS had a pretty poor implementation of it. But if it's done in a mostly natural, non-intrusive fashion I say it'd work and even help a Thiefy experience in the immersive sim department. What I don't get is people decrying the entire concept because of the games that didn't implement it properly.
@Eva: Yeah, but I had to wade in there and have at it because it's the logical next step in virtual simulations. We had a good set of (mostly) un-heated conversations around it, all said and done.
Of course, Muz is right and this is probably a better conversation for another thread, if there's any more to be said.

Liked the demo very much.
The only thing I didn't like - low res textures, but that's not important at all.

Maybe they could compromise on the floating hand thing where you're dragging a hand attached to an arm in some neutral pose and it works the same way, e.g., pulls things open and manipulates objects behind the hand. Make it look like he's some kind of wizard that's pulling open drawers or rotating objects with the power of his palm. I know my palm has magic abilities.

A: spend months on a IK arm that will most likely not look good or fit with all the possible motions and things you can do in the game.
B: spend months making a awesome game.

Played demo, liked demo.

Funny, the "invisible arms" thing didn't even occur to me until I read Eva's post. Guess it didn't kill the immersion for me the way it did for him. I think ( as others have mentioned) that if i saw some goofy arm lunge out and grab a doorknob or a lantern, it would probably break immersion for me.
Like the demo so far, although I think they may have borrowed a bit too much from Call of Cthulhu (one of my fave games). Too early to tell completely, though.

Pre-ordered the game on Steam awhile ago, glad to hear the demo is awesome though.

I played the demo a second time and it wasn't as scary the second time. Actually it just felt overscripted* and silly the second time through. So I think I'll wait for some reviews and find out how long this game is before buying it. I don't think it'll have a lot of replay-value.
* and because I know someone will call me out on this one I'll explain right now what I mean by "overscripted": alright here's the part where my character stumbles... here's where the monster walks by... here's the part with the spooky sound.
When you know it's coming it doesn't quite have the same effect as it did the first time.

key is out, downloading on steam as I type....80%....oh, I'm so excited.
