As far as I can tell, there is a limit to how much sanity can be lost by any particular source- you don't go insane by sitting in the dark, but it does make things a bit worse. I suspect that if you were already terrified thanks to, say, an enemy, sitting in the dark would have no effect, since the enemy is already 'worse'.

Oh but you do. I just went complete red by moving around in the dark.
I've played some more and after exploring the first bit more than I should have I ran out of tinder boxes and I have almost zero oil in the lamp. So, don't sit around too much exploring (so much for the "don't play to win" part) or the part that will come after will be a complete pain in the ass. Which really shouldn't be, but the guy is an utter moron and goes crazy because *gasp* the corridors are dark! Maybe I just spent too much time looking around or lit too many torches, but still.
Speaking of which... why the FUCK doesn't he just take take one of the torches on the wall if he's so scared of the dark? Or a candle at least. No... must be the oil lamp. *sigh*:nono:
I know I probably sound like an ungrateful idiot, but I really like the game. I just wish it didn't have the annoying sanity effects that take forever to go away and just interrupt the little tension there is. I'll stop ranting.

IMO sanity effects have never, ever been done well and I posit that they never will. Amnesia's sanity effects were my one big complaint about the demo because it feels extraneous and unnecessary and comes off as a bit hackneyed for exactly the reason Xenith described.

Okay, so not being able to grab candles is quite stupid and all that, but I have to give it props for perhaps being the only games I've ever played to make me scream. I'm not talking frustration screaming here. I'm talking flat out that scared the oh holy hell fear squeezles screaming here.
Thief? It made me quite a bit tense at times. The Cradle? Cautious, jumpy, a little scared of whatever was behind that door in the attic. Amnesia? JAAAYYYYSSSUUUUSSS.
It's so fun. :thumb:

I"m not a fan of the tooltips telling me to stay out of the darkness... then 5 minutes later telling me to hide in the darkness from my enemies.
Aside from that it is very atmospheric, personally I like the darkness and I think that if I were ever in a situation where there were monsters running around me I'd like to keep it nice and dark so that they would never see me. Your eyes adjust rather nicely. That is of course assuming they can't see in the dark.
BUT the experience is fantastic. The game runs with eyefinity without any problems or hacks and at a resolution of 5040 x 1050 @ 60fps and my studio reference monitors for sound... it's pretty easy to get sucked in and forget I should be doing homework.
(note: I'll be doing an eyefinity mini-review thread here soon)

I thought they were done reasonably well in Dark Corners of the Earth. At least seeing supernatural monsters and hacked up people was a legitimate reason for going insane, unlike just standing in a dark corner.

Yeah, I was hoping for some bona fide TTLG reviews/opinioins before I purchase (even though I know I'm getting it at some point anyway).

I think the problem most people have with the insanity thing is that it's been mislabeled. Calling it sanity does make it seems a bit dumb, because sanity, if lost, isn't something you can regain just by sitting around in a well lit room for couple of minutes. But if you think of it as more a fear meter, the whole thing makes a helluva lot more sense.
For example, sitting around in a cozy well lit room calms you down, lets you collect your thoughts after getting the everliving hell scared out of you. But if you're in a dark corridor, and the nearest source of light is 30 feet away, you're bound to let your imagination run wild. You'll jump at every little thing that makes a slightly scary noise. Thus when something bad does happens, you're more likely to freak right slap the hell out that much quicker and eventually have a panic attack. That seems to fit in more with what you're seeing in Amnesia than it does if you consider it your actual sanity, like you do in DCotE.
In short, you're not going insane, you're becoming so afraid you lose all composure.

Eternal Darkness wants a word.

Well, it can have one: "overrated."
The much-celebrated sanity effects of that game are bullshit. Once you realize they have no effect on the game whatsoever- zero, zip, nada, none- they no longer have the intended effect and can not only be a hinderance, but something much worse too: unintentionally hilarious. "THIS! ISN'T! HAPPENING!" hurrrrrrrrr

It's just a bit of fun, messing with you. Some of the more subtle ones, like making you think you've sat on the remote because the TV volume starts going down genuinely had me scrabbling at the cushions of my sofa.
