I suspect so, but I think that in the age of download distribution, a developer would relish the fact that a "gold copy" is no longer needed, and thus abandon the term completely. They can continue to update and tweak the code right until the launch date and beyond.
They're just priming the hype machine pump, is all. And I
am intrigued since we know only teasingly tiny bits of what the game's about.

The answer is that "going Gold" just sounds cool.
My question is, since it's done, and it doesn't need to be manufactured/printed/burned/distributed/etc, why can't I just download it now instead of two weeks from now?

Lead time for reviews, I guess? And also probably for all the online retailers they're tied up with to get their stuff together.

Look like Penumbra all over again.

10% off and receiving both mac and pc versions at gamersgate if you pre-order (before 8th of September).
I don't know if you can gift things or split them up or anything on gamersgate (there seems to be something about it in the list) but if you wanted one version and a friend wanted enough, you could effectively split them up between you and get it half price.
Alternatively, order the pc or mac version alone and get 20% off.
