Friends who have never managed to get into Thief... - by Sonance

I've also tried to forc-, err, "persuade" my friends into playing Thief 3. Sadly, like many other posts, they usually lost interest or didn't even understand the actual gameplay mechanics involved. Then, they dismiss Thief 1 and 2 because of the aged graphics. My brother, for example, lost patience in a few minutes and just decided to run around the first level of Thief 3 and slaughter everyone with the dagger. It's kind of depressing that such genius still isn't appreciated widely among most gamers. Bah, lousy heretics! :)

With regards to no sound -- let's not forget that there is a percentage of gamers who are actually deaf. I'm not deaf myself, but after attending a deaf awareness seminar as part of a previous job, it suddenly struck me just how many games are difficult (if not impossible) to play without sound.
I think software developers could do a lot more to provide visual aids for audio cues. At a very basic level subtitles should be included for all speech. This is more or less the norm these days, but there are a few contemporary games that neglect this and a whole stack of older ones.
Thief's a tricky one, given that the audio is just as important as the visuals, although LG could have been a bit more helpful by at least including optional subtitles for all the speech, as well as perhaps a "threat indicator" to give the player an idea if there's an incoming foe/friend/unknown from any given direction. Having the screen flash red whenever you take a hit is a pretty good indicator too -- something Doom got right but very few other FPS games have picked up on.
A while back I was considering setting up a web site to bring an awareness of this issue to people, rating games on their ability to deliver a satsifying experience for deaf gamers, etc. Perhaps one day I'll get off my butt and actually do it.

Convincing people to play Thief at this stage is abit hard considering all the Splinter Cells and Metal Gears that has hit the shelves and with the original Thief's ageing, many have doubts. I tried to persuade my friend to play but for some reason, just can't get into it. The closest I managed to get was my cousin who went up all the way to Assassins then... stopped. For reasons unknown.

Sorry to hear that you have a disability.

As for friends not liking thief, i was lucky enough to have one when TDP came out. He bought it, didn't like it and sold it to me, the creepy guy watching him trying to play the game in which he would eventually lose interest.
So here's to one fellow not liking thief and introducing me to it. :thumb:

I agree with Sonance. My friend might be able to get past Bafford's Manor now!

Thief is not for 'tards, plain and simple. It requires listening, reading, and OH TEH MY TEH GOD not attempting to kill everything in sight.
Plainly stated, if thier CD collection includes N'Sync, Creed, or Britany Spears, they won't get it. If they listen to the Cure, it'll snag 'em quick.

Sometimes fett, it's just about getting used to the whole concept of stealth... And some people just CAN'T get it.
