Friends who have never managed to get into Thief... - by Sonance

Was it original or another recycled quote?
Don't know what you mean. "Your face, your ass - what's the difference?" is what he says sometimes when you kill one of the monsters from behind. I just thought it was appropriate. (The boot ZylonBane posted is from DukeNukem) Looks like my little joke went un-appreciated.
Another one of my favorites is - "What are you - some kinda bottom feeding, scum-sucking algae eater?"

Anyone else tried and failed to get friends interested in the Thief series?
My friend bought a copy of Thief Gold on his own (I hadn't seen him in a few years), but never got past the Bonehoard mission because he got frustrated with the jumping required, which he
HATES. He put it aside for other stuff and never went back to it. Then he upgraded all his systems and it no longer worked for him. When I learned this, I directed him to the Patched EXE file so he could play it again. When I talked to him a week later, he'd basically given up on it again. He gets frustrated easily.

And it never occured to you just to run around it on the carpet instead.
Or jump over the metal flooring.

Sometimes fett, it's just about getting used to the whole concept of stealth... And some people just CAN'T get it.
I have the exact opposite problem; I try to hide in the dark or sneak up on enemies in other games and it just doesn't work. It's especially annoying when the manual talks about how using a light gives away your position, but yet they
always know exactly where you are. Not to mention games where the enemies just stand around like statues until you show up. :(

I have one good friend who discovered Thief around the same time as myself. we kind of worked off each other for a bit (b/c of computer requirements and such).
Both my brother and sister like the *idea* of thief and actually like to watch me play it, but neither has embraced the game yet.
As for myself, I absolutely love Thief's atmosphere - but I get so tense that I can't play Thief for huge lengths of time. And it took me a while to learn how to discipline myself not to constantly quicksave. Much more fun w/o minute by minute backups :joke:

I think what Deep Qantas implies to is that almost every single one of Duke's quotes were directly copied from "Evil Dead" series' Bruce Campbell.

Not really. It is a pastiche from several classic eighties films. Dirty Harry, Die Hard and They Live all feature as well as Evil Dead. I am sure other films are in there as well but it has been a long time since I last played Duke Nukem 3D. Indeed the 'kick ass and chew gum' quote which started all this off is from They Live.

Hrm...
A friend of mine, following much badgering finally tried Thief 1.
He got into it pretty well...
Right up until the part when RtC came around... He thought that Thief was a good game, but his reason for stopping was...
The wuss was too afraid to play it. :grr:
After a two month haitus, I've finally convinced him to GET. THROUGH. IT. I also made a blood pledge that there are no more undead in the game. Well, it felt like it.
He's probably finishing it around now, I'm guessing.

I gave it to my mother.
...
She doesn't like that she always has to fight in this violent game. Although she is even quite good. Can take two or three guards (not at the same time) before she dies.
I told her this was not the kind of game where you have to fight. She said she didn't like the fact that there are people around who want no other than slay her to death when they find her.
We made it through Bafford and Cracscleft quite easily (in Cracscleft she insisted on killing that servant of the priest's, such a violent game, it is). She lost her way in the Burrick caves but somehow found to the zombie part where I brought her to the upper levels. Which she really enjoyed. No enemies around.
In Assassins I showed her to jump-run from the guards and hop into the water. She jumped into the water and shot broadheads on them from the other side. What a violent game. Now she is stuck with Ramirez' purse in the inventory and the alarm on. I think she still needs some loot, too.
Don't think she will make it thorugh Constantine's mansion. Too bad. I would like her to see the plot unfold before her.
Mh, well, since Sims 2 (that is a fine game, nobody wants to slay you to death) does not run on her puter, there is a tiny chance I can get her into it again...
Guess thief players are kind of the chosen ones, eh?

Well, at first the Thief games are pretty scary, try convincing your friends to play with a pair of studio headphones on, the professional kind, and then stick around to watch them jump . :ebil:

I would list the main two reasons as impatience, and fear.
Some people just don't like the concept of 'waiting', which is, if you try and do something *now* it might be a lot harder/more complicated than if you *do nothing* for a short period of time, and *then* attempt what you wanted to do *now*. A crucial technique to stealth is *doing nothing*. Some people find this surprisingly difficult.
With some (16+ years old) people, you tell them 'OK, wait behind that box for 30 seconds while the guards go away', and they just can't do it. They wait 15 seconds and then they give up and get caught as a result.
Also some people are scared by the suspense of stealth. When sneaking around, in close proximity to more powerful enemies who will kill you quite easily if they see you, there is a lot of suspense, tension, and a lot of pressure on the player. Some people find this uncomfortable. They want to be the one calling the shots, they want to feel in control, they want to be the most powerful entity in the game. They want to be the entity that causes fear, rather than play the opposite role, of the fearful.
It's similar to horror games when people find it hard to remain calm when in a frightening situation, and as a result, to mask the fear, they adopt a very aggressive mode of play, which frequently leads to death.

My cousin whom I grew up very close with, spending every waking moment playing video games. I lent him Thief Gold but he could never get into it. Let's just say he was never quite able to fill Garrett's shoes.
However - I made sure he tried to play through RTC before returning the game.
His reaction was PRICELESS, and far, far more satisfying than actually converting him would have been. The screams were real, the terror was genuine. He couldn't get any farther than a room or two in, and had to turn it off.
He never got into Thief but he does recognize it's brilliance.
Watching the Dawn of the Dead remake the other day, I realized that both him and I have developed a strong phobia of the undead entirely thanks to Thief.
