Friends who have never managed to get into Thief... - by Sonance

I actually preferred Shadow Warrior to Duke Nukem 3D. Far more funny, especially the voice actor for Lo Wang. But I digress.

I don't understand why some people can't get into Thief. You can't label them as "Quake kill-em-alll monkeys who have to kill every single thing on the entire level!11111!!11!"
Yes, you can. Just because you have the capacity to appreciate a wide breadth of gaming styles, doesn't mean everyone does. Me, I count both Serious Sam and Myst among my favorite games. But it seems most gamers stick to their genre of preference.
EDIT: Ha!

My point was that you can't label people as not everyone will fit into that label. Labeling is bad, mmmkay? :D
Anyway, I moved that huge post into it's own thread as it went a little off-topic.

No, labeling is not inherently bad. Labels, like nearly anything, can be misused and misapplied.
And sometimes it just chafes people when labels are correct, but unflattering.

I've run into that a few times this week.

Blah blah blah.

Well, I thought I had a convert, but he stopped on Cragscleft. AFAIK his games of choice are EverQuest and Neverwinter Nights. I also introduced it to another friend, but I don't think he has played it to this day. His game of choice is his Diablo II Battle Chest when he does do computer gaming.
For me I took to Thief right away. I was looking forward to it when I found a nonplayable demo on my Commandos CD. I played the Bafford demo, then I bought the game. I have lkiked the series ever since

This is for Zylonbane. I believe I had some disagreements regarding DE Invisible War either at this or another forum in the past, but I just had to tell you that the pic of Malcom McDowell is a classic. Possibly one of the greatest movies ever made!

hey, i'm back. and before you know it, i'll probably disappear again!
i got a friend of mine into thief- she gave it a shot because i wouldn't stfu about it. so she gave it a try and after showing her how to get it working on XP, she liked it.
okay, i got fed up with deus ex: invisible war and because i was out of games to play i installed thief gold again. i'm not TOTALLY deaf, i'm able to pick up sound cues- but my problem lies in understanding dialogue. a good example is the first conversation with the guards at the beginning of bafford's. i could pick out a single word: "taffer". go figure, eh? :P it doesn't help that they don't speak clearly at all.
at least i can rely on the FMV transcripts. hell, i even printed them out so i could read along. which brings me to this- could someone do transcripts of scripted conversations? or is there one already?

What is funny is that I love the Thief series but could not get into System Shock.
You guys asking about System Shock - I'll say this:
Didn't play the first one. Bought the second one, hated it, finished it anyway, put it away for 2 years. Pulled it back out a month ago and now I'm addicted to it almost as much as I was TDP when it came out. I wonder if it's one of those that's so involved you have to play it a few times to really appreciate it. I'd say give it another go, experiment and get familiar with the AI and plot - it's phenomenal.
