i'm not TOTALLY deaf, i'm able to pick up sound cues- but my problem lies in understanding dialogue. a good example is the first conversation with the guards at the beginning of bafford's. i could pick out a single word: "taffer". go figure, eh? :P it doesn't help that they don't speak clearly at all.
While the conversations definitely add to the atmosphere of the game, I can't think of any that you actually need to hear. For example, the Bafford gate guards are just talking about going to the bear pits to watch the bears fight. Most of them are just to add to the flavor of the game and the few that actually affect the game trigger a new objective, which will tell you what you need to do.

One of my online friends rented thief as I once told her how much I loved it. (I personally feel sorry that she could only use the X-box game but oh well XP) At first she didn't really like it, I think she thought it was kinda dated (Damn kids these days spoiled by splinter Cell, a great game but quite overrated >=( ), but then she rented it again and gave it anouther go and after about two days of playing, she is now on "Of Breatherens...and Betrayers" heehee

What is funny is that I love the Thief series but could not get into System Shock.
Ditto.
Maybe one of these days it will click with me but I've tried SS2 a few times but could never force myself to finish it.

Missions like the Mage Towers, Thieves Guild, Return to the Cathedral requires you to listen to pick up some useful tips.

Well, I really want my girlfriend to get into Thief - especially TG and TMA. We tried getting the DEMO for TMA to work when I visited her during summer, but we had no luck making it run on her Win2k system. I've promised myself to make another attempt with my full game copies when I go there over Christmas. Hopefully we'll get it to work and hopefully she'll get just as hooked as I am and fully appreciate the unique setting and incredible atmosphere the games have to offer. Hehe... she's quite easily spooked... so that should make it even more fun. ;)

you could always print out the technical FAQ and bring that with you.

I had the opposite problem. After being a Thief junky for a year and a half (literally) I broke down and bought system shock 2. I must of owned it for years having started new games only to get turned off by the first level. Not sure what it was but I finally 'forced' myself to play it all the way through. It was ok, but it was no Thief.
I have ATI cards in my computers and about 10 versions ago, the drivers broke Thief 1 and 2 and they will not fix the problem. The game plays fine unless you want to load a save, read a scroll, check your map, or look at objectives. So the dated graphics are only part of the problem. Newer hardware may push the games out long before old textures will. I still find myself impressed by some of the Thief looks and feels (especially some of the stuff the fans have done). I have turned in reports to ATI and they literally told me to play newer games, so it looks like they could care less and keep reintroducing whatever it was that broke them to begin with in each new driver release.

Even though it is Offtopic:
Huckeye - I had a similar problem with Thief Gold. It started well but whenever you wanted to load a save, look at the map or read something, the screen went black and it said something about "Direct 3D Device does not accurately report texture memory usage".
Maybe you have already tried, but for me the patch from the Thief Series FAQ (Technical / Purchasing / Etc.) Thread above worked and fixed it. I'm playing with an ATI Radeon 9600 SE and have no problems.

I think there are some conversations which are necessary. Murus, Raoul and the Eye come to mind, obviously. Often there are subtler hints, such as Ramirez's location in Assassins, or more significantly, one conversation in Casing the Joint.
