Friends who have never managed to get into Thief... - by Sonance

Thanks, Vogelfrei, but I did try that. I can't remember what happened, but that patch caused more problems than solutions. The only thing that fixes my problem is reverting to an old 3.something ATI driver (I think its 3.4 or 3.6). This is problematic as I also play T3, doom3 and UT2004, all which benefit, if not demand the newer 4.x drivers.
Thanks for the help though.
I also have to turn AGP settings to 4x on my 9700 card if I want to play Neverwinter nights, Sanitarium quit working all together and to get swat 3 going, I have to turn several settings off. I have just come to the conclusion that I am ready to give Nvidea a try on my next system. Hopefully that will support great 'older' games longer than what I have.

Yes, you can. Just because you have the capacity to appreciate a wide breadth of gaming styles, doesn't mean everyone does. Me, I count both Serious Sam and Myst among my favorite games. But it seems most gamers stick to their genre of preference.
EDIT: Ha!
It's great to see another appreaciate SS. Most of the fpsers I know think it is a joke. I find it brilliant. I am excited about its sequal. Also a big Myst fan. My wife and I have enjoyed coop mode of both SS games about 3 times and we are getting ready for a fourth.
I also like FMV games like Temujin. I have been discounted as a human being for telling people that I like that game. Some just think that their opinion is cannon and all else is herecy.

I have convinced 2 out of 3 friends to play Thief. The two who played it were quite pleased but the 3rd was a nintendo kinda guy; no use arguing with him about what a good game is. I remember the first time I played I played thief I tried to kill the guards in the guard house. I kept dieing and i was getting pissed. It was then that my friend said this game is called Thief right? why dont you sneak around then? Wa La the game finally made sense and was playable. I have never been so absorbed into the atmosphere of a game the way Thief has.

Serious Sam IS a joke. But it's a really good joke.

I liken it to the Scream movies. It does a fantastic job of making fun of other FPS games while holding its own as an FPS. I like corny humor so it fit that nitch with me as well.

To answer the original question, I got my wife addicted and her brother as well. I got one guy I work with playing the first DX and I am working on another. Most people I know won't try and they will admint that they do not have the patience for it. Even my wife, who religiously checks for new FM's, complains about the patience needed to play some levels. I could sit and study patrol paths all day and she just wants to keep moving.

I tried to convince my friend to play the game but he wasn't patient and tried to kill everyone in the mission.Of course in Bafford's manor the guards got him and he didn't play thief 1 again.Seems people like games like Counter-Strike and Doom more than to wait by corners guards and blackjacking them or sneaking past them

I tried to get my friend into it and TDP wouldn't install on his computer. So he ended up playing TDS and liking it, so there is hope, but the finnikyness of getting the older games to work is making me work with a crutch.

I tried to addict my friend to Thief by giving him Thief 2 disc. He returned it to me after 2 days saying it wasn't interesting. It was impossible even to make him think Thief should be played with sneaking, not fighting. He said it was out of his patience to sit in shadows; in addition to this, he disliked the graphics. However, he enjoyed the plot and when we saw Thief 3 disc, he thought it has nice graphics and, thus, is worth playing.
Graphics, graphics... *sigh* "They don't make bears as they used to." (c)
