A while back I was considering setting up a web site to bring an awareness of this issue to people...

I have never succeeded in winning over a friend to Thief. All of them like the concept of the game though. One friend went as far to say that if only he had discovered the game when he was younger, then he would have fallen in love with it. I bought him a copy of TMA anyway - maybe one day...
The only friend I have who plays was the friend who discovered thief on a demo disk with me. We played the TDP Demo for days until I had enough money to buy the game. :thumb:
I think it may be that first exposer to Thief that has the most impact. None of my friends like the things that I hype up. Or maybe I just have poor tastes...

Everytime I try to get somone into thief, they immediately see the graphics and roll their eyes. Telling them that it's the best game of all time doesn't seem to help either:p
That said I think it's extremely hard for anyone to enjoy a game with old notably old graphics unless they were exposed to it around the time it first came out. I have tried to get into games with very old graphics and I just can't get past them unless I played them back in the day.

It's funny you should mention this. I know a couple who just recently acquired a fairly nice computer system. I took a couple of my games over to install for the boyfriend (typical FPS games) and was showing him how to play them. One of the first things he asked me was "Do we really need the sound on?" I was thinking to myself "Only if you want to have much hope of actually getting anywhere in the game!" His reason? It was annoying to listen to the gunshots and such. Being deaf is one thing, but to intentionally turn off the sound and play in silence??? Since then he hasn't even played them.
A while back, I loaned my copy of Thief Gold to my friend's neighbor up the street. I'd described it to him and he said it sounded like something he'd like. I installed all the patches and made sure that it ran properly on his system, that the movies worked, etc. The other day I asked how far he'd gotten and he said he hadn't even loaded it!

If I only mention the word Thief to people near me, they all start rolling their eyes. Guess I'm in their eyes a bit too enthousiastic about it...

I'd just like to point out that Sonace's post was made around four and a half years ago ;)

I've tried to hook my youngest sister, three friends, and my roommate with varying degrees of failure. Patience, graphics, gamestyle, and installability all having been issues at varying times.
I still badger them all to give it another try though, and my whole family does the eye roll, lol. They all know what Thief is. It's that weird game Kamyk has kept jabbering on about for years.

I let a friend borrow my original T2 Cds but found them a month later on the dashboard of his truck:mad:
