Bionic Commando Rearmed was the cat's ass. I loved it. Loved REmake too.

That trailer looks pretty fucking sweet. And I do so love it when fan community projects of this scale seem to make it to completion. It's arousing. Another thing I love is broadband. Two minutes for 100 megs off a server one Atlantic ocean away is quite delightful, no matter how off-topic.

And how many companies spend x hundred manhours on doing remakes of their earlier hits?
Over half the Hollywood movie business is based on re-doing old movies with new technology and new actors. I can't see why gaming companies wouldn't do it.

Because if they did, 60% of vocal gamers would be screaming how the industry is creatively defunct?
Added to which: I doubt it would be very interesting for Valve (a firm that doesn't exactly have a very high output of games) to do a remake of one of their games. Say about Valve what you want, but they do seem to be in this because they want to create quality games. I think they'd be bored doing Half-Life again.

It does seem that they have a very good creative ethic doesn't it? TF2 has had regular updates, the HL series is high quality, they encourage modding, and doubtless Left 4 Dead will have a lot of updates.
Consumers like them, in general, and they have a good reputation. They don't need to remake HL1 and what's the bets that some of the BlackMesa team get recruited just like the guy who did Minerva has been?
Valve get a thumbs up from me.

exactly. I loved the bionic remake by the way. played it alot :)
I ain't excited about a mod team making a remake (I'm much more for total conversions when it comes to mods) but playing half-life again with a fresh new pair of pants sounds good. let's hope it's not END of 2009

I`m all for remakes. There has been some fantastic fan made remakes over the various years. Just take a look at even a fraction of the remakes released over at retroremakes.com for one. And thats not even factoring FPS games into the equation.
But on the FPS side I cant recall many fan made remakes. Those that I can think of were mostly done on the Doom sourceports (eg Doom64 and Quake) but were quite good. Absolutely cant wait to play Black Mesa.
Is it just me or did the marines in the trailer video look like the enemy troopers out of HL2 btw? Hard to see in the darkness of that bit, but it looked alot like them from what I could make out.

I'll certainly check this out. But I'm playing through HL: Source and it's great replaying this classic after so long, looking better than ever.

The main problem with remakes is that they are, well, pointless. Sure, Black Mesa looks good and all, but it's, like, what's the point of remaking an already perfectly good game? It's not like we're talking about some rare obscure game that hasn't aged well or anything.
In any case, the gameplay will remain unchanged, the storyline will probably remain the same (afaik there won't be any new levels or anything) and, in the end, you can bet there will be people to complain about this part not being as cool as in the original or that part being too easy and so on.

Fuck that mod. It has severe game breaking bugs that leave the game unplayable. For one, there's loads of broken health stations; this is not a good thing with a rather difficult game, you're pretty much fucked.
I reported the bugs several months ago, but they've still yet to release a hotfix.
