It was just a trick though, no? As in, vertical lines stayed vertical if you moved your head, giving distorted perspective?

Yes - it was equivalent to rendering to a window with a larger vertical resolution to the monitor and then allowing you to scroll your viewport up and down through that larger virtual window (simplified version).

Duke3D had a similar method, if I recall.

Oh, it absolutely was a trick, and Duke3d and Dark Forces used the same trick. I think Descent might have been one of the first true 3d shooters. Certainly the first one I played.

Define "true 3D shooter". Descent came out in 1995, by which time texture-mapped 3D rendering was becoming pretty common. Before then, there were tons of non-textured 3D games.

Yea I know. That's the point. They should be paid.:p
Actually, can someone satisfy my curiosity & tell me the names of some of the people who started off making mods & ended up being noticed & employed?

Eric Arroyo - made awesome custom cars for NFS3, was hired by Bungie and worked on at least Halo 1
Cyberblutch - made SS2 Rebirth, hired by Irrational
That guy who made Minerva for HL2
CS, DoD, TF... 'nuff said.
