Over time it has gradually been accepted.
At that time, anyone who would say anything about this would be insulted, mocked and jumped upon by dethtoll and a few others.
It all depended on how the person broached the subject. If some guy came in and said "I don't like Steam because X, Y, Z, and I don't have a stable internet connection, then no one said much of anything. They'd suggest why they should reconsider based on it's strengths, but usually that's as far as it went.
Now if you went all Cardia1 and his petition thread crazy paranoid, then yeah. People were made fun of, feelings were hurt...I think one guy brought in this elephant one time. It was insane.
So no. It isn't what you believe. It's what you say, and how you say it. It's like Lost_Soul and his DRM thing. He's a pretty cool guy if you don't mention DRM around him. But damn. Get him on the subject, and...
That's where your problem lies, Insellafe. You say something dumb, people bat it back to you, and you go into this sort of weird persecution mode. Once again, it's not what you say, rather...And hell, that just feeds more fuel to the fire, until it gets far enough along you've got this thread.
Like I'm not picking on you because everyone else is. Yeah, I like alot of people here. I guess you could say that they're kinda friends of mine. Doesn't mean I'm gonna jump in the fray against someone just because they are.

This was at its worst when steam was in its infancy and hl2 had just been out (and the years proceeding). At this time, there were people on the forums who would speak out against steam as it was a bad precedent, paving the way for games that could not be resold or even bought used. It was largely accepted, due to valve's saintly position among the gaming community.
While it's true that Valve has a good reputation among gamers, you're conveniently forgetting that Steam also has a lot of benefits that have caused it to become accepted among gamers. Like older, otherwise unavailable games (where re-releasing them in boxed form isn't financially profitable, or technically difficult because of incompatibility with modern OS's) becoming available again, instant access to your games from every location, no need to download patches, frequent sales where you can get good games for really cheap, etc. People have weighed the benefits against the drawbacks and many have decided the benefits weigh heavier, it's crazy to think that it's just because of Valve's position among gamers that Steam has become accepted.
