This is a compelling argument. Technically not an issue for me as my computer is on the opposite corner in all 3 dimensions from the bedroom in a 4 level split. But we do have a roommate.

Also all I have for a micophone is the one in my USB webcam. Which overloads if it's set higher than 0.2 so its difficult to dial in, I don't like headset mics.

I could technically hook up one of my nice microphones to my audio interface, but then there's issues with using more than one device at a time along with broadband internet. IRQ conflicts abound.

I don't want to speak for him, but think of a guy like dethtoll. I have played several rounds of Left 4 Dead with him and his friend. As you know, it is a game heavily reliant upon communication and we have played successfully with nary a word spoken. Maybe it has something to do with his speech/hearing. Maybe it is just his personal preference. Doesn't matter. Fact is: he pretty much relies on type and his gameplay doesn't suffer in the least. Some of us can play just as well as the verbal players do, with us using only type.

It doesn't help that my microphone is basically a (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0kCRbSyjmo) Brujeria album maker. But my hearing loss plays a big part in it. Listening to people over the mic is very, very difficult, so I keep VOIP off. In L4D I try to make use of the voice commands to get across what I want to say.
