calling lostsou... oh wait, he still wont give a shit. :P
This is cool, I'll be watching.

I find it interesting... but I still don't really believe it. Most of the articles concerning this have been on a certain Linux web site which has been known for spreading rumors in the past. I wish Valve would just come out and officially announce it if it is true, but I understand that if something were to happen and they decided to scrap it, people would be pissed if they previously announced that it was coming.
Just look at the users still complaining about UT3 never showing up in the end for example.

Yeah, but UT3 sucks.

I license the C4 engine for screwing around with. Maybe someday I'll make a half decent mod-calibre game with it.
In any case they just finally announced that the next version that is released is linux compatible, which is awesome, especially since the licensing prohibits releases for OS's not officially supported.
If Valve ends up delivering this, I'll be happy. But I'm certain the whole catalog wont be available. IF it were though, I'd probably think twice about ever buying another copy of windows.

Well, of course the entire catalogue won't be. That'd involve every single developer recoding their titles for native Linux support - meaning, retooling everything for OpenGL. Too much work for most. Not happening.
What Valve's looking at is, probably, Linux support for all Source engine games and the few retail/indie games that already have a Linux compile ready.
lost_soul on 1/5/2012 at 15:12
It would be easier for them to make the necessary fixes to wine if they wanted the entire catalog of games to work. It can already run most of them to some extent.

Which is probably a dead giveaway that this isn't actually about making their library available on linux per se.
It's been very heavily rumoured that Valve is working on their own console. This is probably Valve telling us what OS that console is going to run under the hood.

I wondered that too.
But that still doesn't make a lot of sense if the idea was to have a console that would run the vast bulk of the steam catalogue - if that's what they're thinking. If they're thinking something else, then perhaps...

I don't see this being all that profitable, TBH. With a lot of Lunix "gamers" even if you gave them what they wanted on silver platter, they'll just give some arbitrary cop out "excuse" and steal your games anyway - especially the far-left, open source zealots.
