I wasn't happy about intervening in Libya. I felt it was a case of taking sides in a conventional civil war more than a humanitarian mission. Although I'm not categorically opposed to taking sides in a civil war, I didn't think any of the NATO countries had a compelling national interest in this one and I don't think we really knew enough about the side we were helping. The rush to act seemed to be driven in part by French and British zeal to settle scores with Gaddafi. Another thing that bothered me is that Libya was the poster child for renormalization. It was the positive example we could point to when talking to North Korea or Iran, and gave us credibility when offering normal relations and economic development in return for ceasing support for terrorism or developing WMD. I think that credibility is now gone and the message we've sent is "once a pariah, always a pariah." Even if we shake your hand in a public display of affection and feign to make peace, we'll still take you out at our first opportunity.
As for Syria, we'd be out of our minds to intervene militarily but I'm all for sanctions.
