The box/DVD case thing... Might that be a difference between Europe and the States? I've seen a number of US exports in shops that were in cardboard boxes (although much smaller ones than e.g. the Ultima boxes of yore), but except for Collector's Editions I don't think I've seen any European releases that didn't come in DVD boxes in the last six, seven years.
Since I expect the serial numbers to be printed on the back of the manual, I've had several annoying moments where I was installing a game, DVD in the drive, and then it asks me for the number - which is printed on the disk. If the installation programme was more clever, it'd automatically eject the DVD when this happens.
