Gamersgate. did i make a mistake? - by Volitions Advocate

When Steam first came out I was pissed. But now I'd prefer to buy all my games from them. Its easy and convenient and my wife doesn't get upset at me displaying/keeping all my game boxes.
I also figured I couldn't really trust any of the other direct download services because I figured they didn't have as good a system, and I didn't want 8 different versions of Steam on my computer all the time.
Well I just bought Penumbra Overture for 5 bucks and beat it. and for some stupid reason black plague isn't available anywhere in canada. at least that I can find. and Amazon wont ship it here. SO I did the necessary evil and went to their direct to drive style download service. Its downloading right now.
Any hiccups I should brace myself for?
Do I have to have the Downloader running to play the game?
EDIT: okay.. so it doesn't minimize to the system tray. there goes 20 minutes of downloading

You probably should check their FAQ/ forum.
I don't know what GGs normal copy protection is as I've only used it for Paradox's own games which (effectively at least) don't have any. I am 99% sure that you do not have to have an active internet connection or have the downloader open to play any games from there, though.
My only real complaint is that their resume download feature is a bit flaky if you get an unscheduled drop out. Some people complain about their credit card authenticator too, probably because it actually asks for an advanced security feature which most sites do not ask for.

I used Gamersgate to get Black Plague. The only annoyance you'll face is having to grab the downloader to get the game. Past that, once you download it and have it verified, you can uninstall all the extraneous pieces of software they saddle you with and play the game without it.
So unless something weird comes up, your experience should be about as smooth as mine.

One of the advantages of Gamersgate (at least in my part of the world and possibly the UK), is that THQ games have no regional sales restrictions, unlike with Steam.
But that opens the whole new can of worms, would they work with mods? Ie Dawn of War mods reportedly aren't too agreeable with the Steam version.

Yep. Sadly, it's shorter than Overture, but I think more creepy.

I have it, I just need to get into it. Unfortunately I've got a bit of a backlog here... ;)
