The thing is, it really is the best selling FPS of all time now, which I find incredibly disheartening. There are much, much better examples of the genre out there. And to think that it's outsold Doom by a factor of 6:1 just seems wrong.

GTA: Vice City Played it quite a bit but didn't enjoy it nearly as much as 3, despite it doing all the things I thought 3 needed (bikes, property, better characterisation). The design is quite off putting. Pseudo Miami is boring, small and featureless. I hate every major eighties aesthetic (especially the pop music) and there's far too much affection in their affectionate parody.
It seems to be the fan favourite, but I liked it less than
San Andreas as well, mainly because Vice City was as flat as a pancake. I loved San Fierro in
San Andreas - just zooming around with my BMX bike. Even if Miami itself may be as flat as Vice City, it was simply not very interesting in terms of topography.
@Malf: does anyone claim that the
CoD titles are innovative? I loved
CoD4, but I don't think there's *anything* innovative about the single-player gameplay (can't really comment about MP because I don't know enough about it). I think that in all fairness anyone would have to admit that what Infinity Ward does, it does extremely well (i.e. cinematic experience making heavy use of scripted sequences), even if some people hate the heavy reliance on scripts with a vengeance.

That's the supposedly innovative bit I'm referring to. I can understand
why people think it's new; after all, the modern console FPS player hasn't experienced FPS multiplayer outside of Halo and CoD4 really, but it's all old hat to established PC gamers.
Multiplayer FPS games on the PC have evolved beyond simple deathmatch and CTF, which were really perfected by Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament.
Multiplayer FPS these days should be more ambitious and involved, not simply about getting the highest kill-count.

Simulation racers:- 100% unfun and boring as fuck.
Space flight sims, I would need to buy find a joystick that worked fine with legacy W95/W98 titles + DOSbox, I really haven't bothered to research it. I bought Freelancer + Starlancer recently though, I understand that the former was designed for mouse.
I only ever played Civ1, never touched the sequels.
Damn, I only need "Action RPG" or "FPS/RPG" for the win on my "favorite genres" bingo card.
I think the only genre that I've repeatedly tried to get into and failed are RTS's. I loved/love Warcraft 2, particularly for the humor and the multiplayer, but everything since has left me cold, and I still consider that the last great Blizzard game.
Games that I've played or attempted to play and have a lot of respect for but ultimately wouldn't consider them enjoyable:
Empire: Total War
Fallout 2
GTA:Vice City/San Andreas (tho I loved 3 for some reason)
Hitman 2/3/4
IL-2 Sturmovik
Indigo Prophecy
Games that everyone loves and I find them utterly fucking useless:
Assassin's Creed
Dead Space
Gothic 1/2/3
Far Cry 1/2
Quake 2
Stalker: Clear Sky
Star Wars: Jedi Academy

Hitman 2
I must have replayed that buggy piece of shit Hitman five or six times, but Hitman 2 I couldn't even be bothered playing through once. I have no idea why, on paper it's perfect. An improvement on the first one in every way. I should love this. But I just dont.

Far Cry 2
Quake 2
Is there actually any body that holds either of those in high regard?
Not counting console kiddies who haven't played Stalker and pretentious fuck console gaming journalists who love to wank on about the Lego block political commentary in blogs, most people lambasted Far Cry 2.
Quake 2 is just a massive pile of shit, I'm solely talking about SP though. I can't really say about the MP, I played a few Threewave CTF matches, but quit shortly after since I liked Quakeworld CTF a lot more.

Half-Life 2: playable, but still a huge disappointment after the original. I especially hated the (lack of decent) story.
Dead Space: the camera angle made me feel seasick and the controls were awful. Guess I should give it another try some time, though.
Alien vs Predator 2: Spent too much effort trying to emulate the films, compared to the freshness of the first game.
F.E.A.R.: It was all right and had good AI, but the horror aspects just felt artificial and forced, and served more to annoy than to scare.

i loved far cry 2, it was my favourite game of 2008 and probably my favourite first person game since Deus Ex. it seems to also be popular with gaming theorists analysing its mechanics.
i have played stalker, and have not seen anyone praising fc2 for its political commentary (which is understandable)

"Command and Conquer"
I absolutely loved Warcraft 2, so I was dead keen to try out the other big name of the genre, but I hated it.
At that time I would obsessively complete any game I played, and this compulsion forced me to at least complete the first campaign so that I could feel like I'd properly finished with it, but I had zero interest in trying the other campaign at that point, and I've barely glanced at a C&C game since.
(Although I did download the free ones... I'm curious enough to wonder if I'd still feel the same way about it today. I've never installed them, though.)
Others:
"We Love Katamari", due to imprecise controls, and those effing time limits.
"Urban Chaos". It got great reviews, but I found it rather lacklustre.
"Freespace 2" (I've always blamed I-War for my not liking this).
