Ah, right, Diablo II. Horribly unbalanced gameplay and lack of save killed it for me. Fuck that game.
Namdrol on 3/6/2009 at 18:12
Dungeon Siege is the worse fucking game in a whole history of bullshit games.
And some insane journalists gave it awards.
I wanted to cut my fingers off just to stop playing, but one good thing, it finally broke me of completing games just for the sake of it.
To my shame and horror though, I finished this piece of revolting excrement.

Diablo II - Let's face it, it was never going to be about the back story. But it just didn't have the atmosphere of the first game.
You can say that again. After half an hour of grinding through the wilderness, I found myself completely turned off.
Half Life 2: Incredibly polished, slick gameplay, nice to look at. But it lacked cohesiveness and wasn't as good as the original HL1 with its survivally horrorific bits and string of inspired set pieces. Plus, the game felt kind of... well,
distant would be the word. It simply wasn't as visceral or in your face as the original Half Life.
GTA: San Andreas: Usually, when I hit an annoying part in a game, I depend on the narrative push of the plot to grit my way through it. SA had more annoying missions than any other game I can remember, and the plot, characters, situations - it all just combined into this gigantic pile of meh that I couldn't care less about.
Quake: Yep. 'fraid so. I thought it was too grey and played almost exactly like Doom. The level design was amazing in places though, and it had an awesome soundtrack.

Planescape: Torment. I want to like it. I want to love it. I really do. But that fucking Infinity engine is the fucking worst thing on the planet. I will not play any game that uses it. PS:T really, really fucking deserves a remake.
So you hated PS:T because of the
graphics engine? You're gonna have to elaborate on that. I remember you complaining about having to run away from encounters most of the time, but this changes everything.
So if you hated it because of graphics, what exact aspects were they? The low resolution? (You're still using CRTs, so I it can't be that bad.) the chunky UI?
Gameplay mechanics and technical design of engines don't usually overlap. If they released the the source code to BG2, I'm sure that someone could most likely build a fucking racing car game (with zero relation to turn-based stat-based RPGs obviously) on it if they really wanted to. For a real world example:- How about Eidos Montreal building Deus Ex 3 and Thief 4 on the Tomb Raider: Underworld engine? Or the fact that Bionic Commando Rearmed, the new BC game and Ghost Recon Advanced War Fighter 1 & 2 for PC are built on an engine originally designed for racing games?
Did you really hate PS:T because of how fucked the logic was behind its AD&D rules were? I discuss some examples below.
Baldur's Gate 1:-
I bought BG1 after enjoying the hell out of NWN1 and KotOR1 (even though I had little clue as to what I was doing, I had only mastered the D&D3/d20 system on my 2nd playthrough of KotOR2. Now I know that presets and auto-assigned stats during initial character creation are total shit. Custom characters and manual stat assigning all the way.) The first thing that threw me was how vastly different AD&D was to D&D3 rules. Like all that THAC0 bullshit was illogical, why would a AC+1 sword be more powerful than a +3? And there were no Feats!
I got stuck in an early dungeon and haven't revisited BG1 since.
Quake 2I made an (
http://ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120051&highlight=quake) entire thread about much arse Q2 sucks a while back.
CnP from a recent thread:-
Jedi Outcast've tried playing through Jedi Outcast twice and both times I got lost not knowing where to go next. After running around said levels for what seemed like hours, I'd just give up and shelve the game.
I always loathed that about old school FPSes, you'd end up lost not knowing where to go. I lost count of the number of times I wound up running emptied levels in Doom 1 & 2 for fucking hours.
Oh and FUCK
Hexen 1, that was the epitome of "you're now lost within this labyrinth of a level FOREVER!"

Thief II - Garrett's back! After playing the first mission, I realised I didn't care.
OMFG trolling! /me hits Report Post button 50 times.

Then you never played Wolfenstien 3D. As much as I loved the game at the time, there were a lot of levels where you had to open some obscure secret wall to progress through levels.
Far Cry - Another vote for this. Being so brittle that I had to hide in bushes with plants in my face wasn't very thrilling. And then they had to cock it up further by throwing crazy super mutants at you? I do like the sequel though. Creating big grass fires to make chaos can be fun.
Ultima Online - My hate for this game knows no end. It's kind of like a very expensive BDSM nightclub. You pay hundreds of dollars to pay people to beat the shit out of you mercilessly. Except in this life, you can't even stab a rabbit.

Oh god, Portal. It was fun for the two hours that it took to complete, and their rip-off of shodan was entertaining. For the two hours that it took to complete. But why in god's name is it praised so heavily for being short? And all this shit about it having depth and 'the cake is a lie'. Is this all just coming from people who've never played a game more complex than Halo or Pacman? I'll admit, it showed promise, but in such a short game it's not really possible to do very much to give it any real depth. And I swear, if someone says it's 'refreshing'...
Fallout 2 is actually my favourite Fallout game. The very start of the game can be tough if you ignore physical strength and melee skills, but you can easily skip most, if not all, of klamath and head straight to the den, where you can buy decent guns like the .44 magnum (which will sort you through most of the game). Fallout 3 on the other hand really pissed me off with Bethesda's trademark massive but generic worlds, crap game balance, pampering of the player with limitless resource and weightless ammo, horribly small assortment of annoying voice actors, a general failure to really capture the spirit of Fallout and for fucks sake, why in god's name did they decide to include a fucking vampire quest?   I almost vomited blood all over my keyboard after doing that quest.

What the fuck are you talking about? Of course I hated the gameplay. And I blame the Infinity Engine for it. Have you been paying attention at all?
june gloom on 3/6/2009 at 18:59
Graphics in PS:T don't bother me. They add to the charm, even.
EvaUnit02 on 3/6/2009 at 19:28
God dammit dethtoll. What the fuck does the gameplay have to do with the technology framework that its built upon?!
