I contest your opinion.
I would like to yield my time back to Bakerman.
edit: I was tempted to make this a long rant about the evils of capitalism, tying into the teachings of Timeless Greek and Roman philospohers, Caesar, the guilds of the middle ages, and the Immortal Robert Byrd.

Yeah, god forbid people try to get some sort of compensation for the work they do. How fucking evil!

I made this awesome game, and I made it simply for the love of making awesome games. Too bad my kids died of starvation during those two years I wasn't earning a wage.

Whoah okay, say I explain. (I'm aware that was a tasteless way to start a discussion...)
IMO, there isn't a thing people complain about in games that isn't caused by the constraints of a publisher's need of, or expectation for, profit from the game. (Of course, some people just have bad ideas :p. I can't account for that, but I think a ton of games would be a hell of a lot better if they weren't treated as profit-makers first, entertainment/art second.)
1. Time and budget constraints causing features to be cut or existing ones to be dumbed down
2. Consoleisation, if you want to use that word - pandering to the largest market to increase the chance of profit
3. Design-by-committee
4. Homogenisation of design and gameplay
5. DRM

I'm not saying we shouldn't have to pay for games - I'm saying that games as a medium are being held back because they are an industry.
Kuuso on 12/12/2009 at 23:24
Without the industry we would have a fraction of the games made as we have now. The industry is not a constraint for people to make games outside it.

Would be better as:
"Developers or Publishers making large amounts of money, which is better and why?
Discuss!!!"
I do wonder sometimes if things wouldn't be better if you decoupled publishing and developing- ie publishers cannot own their own internal dev houses, and cannot require devs to give up IP as part of a publishing deal.

Jonathan Blow summed it up pretty well. Most games are made for profit, they will do the absolute minimum while pushing those buttons of yours.
There are good people working within that system though.
