The only time I buy something I don't think I'll like is if my curiosity outweighs the price of admission. Picked up a bundle of sims recently so I could give IL2-Sturmovik and Agriculture Simulator a go. Also picked up I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream for a couple of bucks. Remember seeing this in magazines back in the 90's and I've always wondered about the game behind that title.

Gotta put Assassin's Creed Brotherhood on my list. Damn, it's just so … so … samey … and … Assassin Creed-y!
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare might be another candidate, because I couldn't resist the $5 sale price. My total experience with this series is limited to 15 minutes of COD MW2.

I hate that game. I HATE IT. It's the worst PC port ever, and by that I mean it was actually unplayable. Every time the game loaded in something, it freezed for a moment and threw my view off. It happened every time you opened a door, turned a corner, etc. Every 10 seconds. Good luck shooting something under these conditions. Good luck even controlling you character's movement under these conditions. Impossible. And what did I do? I got a trainer, activated god mode (as I said, combat was 100% impossible), and finished this game four times. FOUR TIMES ... because reasons obvious to everyone here, I guess - writing, characters, choices. Everything that's not technical is pretty much awesome in this game. I still get crazy when someone mentions it - I can't decide if it should be praised for the content, or bashed because of the crap technology. One day, it'll make me develop a split personality, I'm sure.
I'd also mention PC version of Splinter Cell Double Agent. I hated many thing about that game - story, characters (not that these were that good in the previous games, but this was a new low IMO), level design, interface, plus it was a crap port. The core gameplay hovewer was still SC, and it had a few good levels (Sea of Okhotsk) and great improved character animations.

AP was patched! It's a bit better after that, at least in terms of the loading freeze nonsense being dealt with. I certainly did feel your pain, but you can play it now and bash the other shoddy bits like the godawful cover system instead. :D

I tried that patch back then, and it fixed the game in the only possible way that game can be fixed: it didn't start anymore. :)

Oh look, dethtoll throwing incongruous videos and insults instead of actually contributing or disagreeing civilly, what else is new. I won't even dignify your shitthreading question with an answer.

As a gamer, there are enough examples of good game design out there that you don't have to force yourself to slog through shit in order to give recognition to a mechanic.
Hmm, perhaps, but it's not always easy to find some of the mechanics I mentioned in other games, and I think it's fair to play the game that really originated/invented it as sort of homage/original case study. Same goes with movies or music.

As a game designer, it makes no sense anyway to play those games as there are enough LPs and short videos demonstrating the core design elements to study them without having to play the games themselves.
I don't fully agree - some games can be completely glimpes from an LP, but others I feel something is lost when you remove the interactivity. Like the deliberate struggle with The Path's controls you really got to play to feel - if I just watched an LP I'd say "meh, crap controls" and think no more of it.

Oooh I've been really curious about it, with a rather interesting premise and general good things I heard. Was tempted to get it, but with my lack of patience for P&Cs that's probably a better candidate for a watching LP.

Haha, good example. While I didn't hate AP and actually enjoyed good chunks of it (particularly world/characters/convos/narrative), the gameplay just drove be batshit annoyed, flipping between punishingly impossible to hilariously easy.

It wasn't a shitthreadding question. It was an honest question. Do you like anything? Because your whole list was nothing but "nope, don't like this genre, this genre, or this genre, and this one sucks too."
And let's be honest, Portal 2 should be on that list too.

Back in the day I played Hong Kong '97 for a really long time, not exactly sure how long because of the pills but it's pretty much the reason I had to go tell some guy about my dreams for a few weeks.

Yeah, lets pounce all over the GAME DEVELOPER who wants to be a little reflective on playing video games. Fuck that man, why would you want to listen to what a guy thinks about video games when all he ever did was making a fucking video game from start to finish including marketing and recruiting a team all on his own.
koob i dont want to hear what you have to say at all because all youve ever done is CONTRIBUTE and thats gheeeeeyyyy
Jeeze, fuck you guys.
Currently I'm playing Realms of the Haunting as part of my 2.5D kick. I love and hate this game. The puzzles are mind boggingly out of context, in some cases, incredibly hard, and don't forward the plot. Yet its atmospheric as hell, focuses a lot on the adventure element, and has just the right blend of detective/adventure and action. You have a constant companion throughout the game whom you can discuss EVERYTHING with, which is an interesting twist in the surhor genre. The scares aren't cheap, and yet are still effective even though you're not always isolated and alone. But the EGAD the controls. They're worse than vanilla SS1.
