S.P.E.C.I.A.L. isn't used in Arcanum; however, they do use a similar system.

It's Halo in third person. Big change, time for a genre shift.
I can't tell if you're saying that GoW being in third person is moot because it's, as you say, "Halo in third person."
'Cuz if you are that's dumb. A third person shooter is, by nature, not in first person.

Hey, don't knock Call of Duty. Also Gears of War is not an FPS. If you're going to attack a genre (which is stupid anyway) try to attack games that are actually IN that genre.
Jesus. Next you'll be calling Metroid Prime a Doom clone.
Why not? It's pretty much like all the other WWII FPS games, killing nazis again and again just gets old and fast.
I know Gears of War is not an FPS but still is an action game and it is one of those games that brings nothing new or exciting to it's genre.

Aside from the fact that hating WW2 games is dumb, Call of Duty is actually pretty good. Yes, it's pretty much bog-standard, but who cares when it's so well presented? I've yet to see any other WW2 FPS recreate the odyssey of noises that is WW2 as well as CoD did. I agree in that WW2 games tend to get samey, but that's because 90% of them are Medal of Honour. Incidentally, Brothers in Arms looks at WW2 from a much more personal aspect, something most WW2 games are sorely lacking in. But you don't care, obviously.

First of all, Gears of War being action does not make it a first person shooter. Again, if you're going to hate something, get the terminology correct. Second of all, are you implying that all FPS games are the same? Because not only is that a typical statement from an FPS hater but it's also wrong.

Hey, I liked what gameplay there was in the game!
That's why you buy MGS2: Substance and play the VR missions. The Metal Gear Solid games are good for a couple run throughs (if you like the plot/environment), but what'll actually be worth playing for more than just the stealth camo and unlimited ammo are the VR missions, which, blissfully, are just gameplay (some of which can be really clever, the MGS: Integral VR missions included some really brilliant challenges... and for the PC you didn't have to beat the stupidly difficult things to unlock everything, so you could just skip annoying shit.) The MGS story is an acquired taste, however.

But it's still essentially "run around and shoot at things." Just because you can see the back of your head along with your target reticle doesn't mean they've done anything innovative or worthwhile to change the genre. R6 (or should I just not mention it because you're going to have a fit?) is built as an FPS, but should you want to you can swith to 3rd Person (or effectively, over the shoulder, because the way it's implemented games like GoW and R6 or T: DS isn't really
third person, because you don't have a lofty objective view point, you're still directly controlling the character, hence your entire arguement is moot to begin with), that doesn't make it a radically different game. All it does is let you see around corners better.
A better example of what is "third" person, but definately not an FPS, are the MGS series (up to MGS4, which basically has a turn-into-FPS button), because in those games you aren't just following behind the character as though it were built like an FPS.

Did you miss all of the gimmicky bile that appeared on CD-ROM media during the early-mid 90's?
Yes.

god nobody understands basic concepts anymore
A first person shooter is a game from the perspective of the player character- in other words, it's in first person- you see what the player character sees. A third person perspective is, conversely, one in which the camera is placed behind the player character.
Too complex? Let me break it down.
A game that is not utilizing a first person perspective is NOT a first person shooter. It is a THIRD PERSON game. But I keep forgetting this is TTLG, and around here we call a spade a bloody shovel and nobody's allowed to disagree.
As for Gears of War being innovative or not, that has nothing to do with the fact that it's not a fucking FPS.
God, what's suprising is that this isn't even the dumbest shit I've ever heard as regards to hating FPS. No, several years ago this one jRPG fan I knew called Resident Evil- one of the originals, not RE4- a "Doom clone" because it had guns and you shot things.

Never mind the perspectives, a person must be incredibly stupid if they can't differentiate the fundamentally different game mechanics between Halo and Gears of War.

Why are you so hung up on classifications? It doesn't make a difference. It's the
same fucking gameplay, so it doesn't matter whether it's FPS or 3rdPS, GoW can still be a Halo-clone or whatever, because it plays the same, even if it looks a little different. Where the camera is in relation to the player,
isn't a fundamental qualification of what the game is, it doesn't make it a different
kind of game, no matther how much you can't wrap your brain around that.
