I'm with Aja. The metal gear games actually manage to be pretentious and silly at the same time. Understand it or hate it.

Part of the reason why MGS2 is so great is that it acknowledges the disparity between cinema and video games but then throws them in the blender anyway. The entire time you're conscious of the gameplay, the game is conscious of the gameplay, and the game is conscious of your consciousness. It's maddeningly ridiculous and that's why I love it. The character switch, for example, is a brilliant way to both throw a huge wrench into everyone's expectations while simultaneously (and, of course, consciously) igniting the latent homophobia in thousands of teenage boys who were
so looking forward to it. When the president grabbed Raiden's crotch I almost died.
Flawed as it is, I wouldn't hesitate to call MGS2 a masterpiece -- and certainly more readily than nearly all of the recent so-called 10/10 games.
Thank you. I was waiting for this.
The Metal Gear series basically has hung a dozen lanterns on its nonexistent fourth wall. And that's part of its charm- as well as the story that revels in blending the truly absurd with the deadly serious.
As to MGS2, well... like I've said before, it's basically a Neil Stephenson story without the fucking suck.

How about both.

You have to be pretty thick to not understand Metal Gear Solid's high school level philosophies; and Lego block social/political commentaries, that are told with the subtlety of a jackhammer.

That's the beauty of it, it's so over the top pretentious it just can't be taken seriously, I don't, and neither does the game.

Gee, "The game doesn't take itself seriously" is sure a popular excuse lately.

Yes, well, I've yet to see a game that applies to that isn't Metal Gear.

Yea you pretty much covered it Aja, I agree with you.
It's the plot that makes MGS what it is and the whole fourth wall thing. I mean some of the characters are just so awesome(eg. Psycho Mantis).
And sometimes it can prove a challenge with it's stealth element.
That's why it is one of my top 3 games.
Koki on 1/10/2008 at 06:09
So what you're saying is that the biggest strenght of the MGS is the it doesn't have any immersion?
Aja on 1/10/2008 at 06:21
It's like, the game is so self-aware that self-awareness becomes part of the immersion...? I don't know how else to describe it; MGS2 is unique.
