Games you learned to love. - by gunsmoke

Everybody hates Liberty Island, but I love it- it's a perfect introduction to the game and feels very Thiefy in its layout. I'm less partial to some parts of NYC (especially anything involving the Hotel.)

Liberty Island is very big, very open, and very gray. I can't see how it's a good introduction to the game, most people would probably immediately get lost.

I really enjoyed Liberty Island, that demo completely sold me on DX.

I loved Liberty Island, but the later parts of the game completely outshine it.

A few mentions of Baldur's Gate in this thread, which gives me some hope.
I still haven't figured it out.

But... it's easy! Just read the manual, the rulebooks, take notes every half a minute, memorise stats and attributes, remember to keep your thief on detect mode, use combat buffs before combat, spam the space key...
Oh, and pray. A lot.
I actually liked B'sG II and Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment, but the 2nd edition AD&D rule set makes it easy for me to be cynical. And that's not taking arcane class restrictions into account.

I've yet to finish BG and haven't worked out all the tricks, but it seems a fair bit easier if you make heavy use of bows.

With bows and slings (for characters who can't use bows), you get to take out most enemies before they can touch you, and, for some reason, fighters specialized in ranged weapons get more attacks per round at low levels than they do specializing in a melee weapon.

Stalker - A huge world with practically zero "hand-holding", plus a ho-hum starting area, meant I abandoned it at first. But I always intended to come back at some point, and after a few patches I did just that. Loved it.
X2: The Thread and X3: Reunion - Insanely high learning curves, but I just love the open space combat-trading-exploring genre. Forced myself to learn X2, got into it a bit, then X3 came out, forced myself to learn that, came to really like it. Definitely not for everyone though, and the interface is awful. But I guess that's what you get when you want an incredibly complex combat sim as well as an economic sim all to be played with a console gamepad.

I think the thing that initially turned me off the most to it is that the wide open spaces pretty much immediately demonstrate every flaw of the AI before you even really get into the game.
