I think the thing about Dark Souls that encourages people to keep trying is that it never feels overly unfair. I mean, okay... Blighttown is where you go if you hate yourself, and Sen's Fortress is some fucking PS1-era Tomb Raider bullshit. But for the most part, the game doesn't actively try to screw with you.

Shadow of the Beast on Amiga.
Rock hard.
I've played some GTAIV and CoH. Those missions weren't hard to me, I reckon you guys just missed the easy(ier) way to do them.
I say this as someone who finds lots of games hard. There were loads of really hard missions in GTA3 and 4 that I really struggled with.
And Dark Souls....

Ghosts n Goblins/Ghouls is another 2 for me. Those games are so good but so damn hard to beat that I've never managed it.
The fact that they require you to get through the whole games twice to beat them properly. Nope. Once is hard enough.

Back in the C-64/Amiga days, I finished games much less often than I do now. Perhaps that's also due to me pirating 95% of the games I played on those systems; if I pay money for a game, I'm more likely to want to finish the damn thing.

Homeworld - I think I got the Citadel of Kadesh, so thats level 7. Due to the way
the game works, if you don't have an adequate fleet by level 6, you won't make it, if you have an impressive fleet, then the enemy is tougher more able to counter your setup. It's been one of my favourite games of all time and it bugged me that I never got around to finishing it.
I didn't have as hard a time with Cataclysm or HW2, either they were easier or I was older and more experienced with that kind of game. I used to smoke a lot of weed back then too.
I recall reading about how THQ acquired the HW IP a while after purchasing Relic. All of the fans expected to hear an announcement for HW3, but all we got were more 40k games.

I spent ages getting to the grips with the plane parts of the flying missions (probably not helped by M&KB contols) and then the fucking helicopter one just floored me. I don't get how a game which is so non-serious and cartoony suddenly sideswipes you with a relatively complex flying sim mechanic. Just Cause 2 did flying just right I think. Prototype was good too.

helicopter one was sheer luck, just try and try again until you suddenly nail it!

I may try again some day. San Andreas is such a great game - it killed me having to just stop when I hit those fucking missions.
